i went out this morning to watch for some ducks and see how my spot was holding up. there was a car that i've seen there a few times that got there before me.

after about a half hour of walking and calling along the shoreline i accidentally stumbled upon the guy. dekes, shotgun and all. i said sorry when he startled but he didn't turn around or even look at me when it was obvious that he knew i was there.

what's the protocol there? call game warden or not?

Maybe it was the "General"

If it were me I'd tell the guy in the a really nice way that we are in the split and that you just wanted to let him know in case a GW came because he could get in big trouble. Pretty much you are coming off as doing him a favor by letting him know.

From there it depends on what he does...if he is shocked by the news and glad you told him and pretty much cool about packing up then I'd probably mind my own business and go about my day. If he's a jerk about it and doesnt pack up then I'd call it in.

To hunt during the split is pretty stupid if you are ignorant...but if you are doing it on purpose thats even worse. I give people the benefit of the doubt and put myself in their shoes...if someone told me I'd be thankful and learn from it...pretty much the same results as if a GW came out and wrote tickets except it wouldnt cost me. In the end if it's the same result I don't see a big need for a financial punishment unless it's being done on purpose.

The fact that he didn't look ya in the eye sure makes it sound like he knew what he was doing. Based on that I would have called.

If the guy would have talked to ya and he seemed like a nice guy I would have mentioned the split. Otherwise GW time!

and he was about a quarter of a mile from my spot.... stupidly... he was hunting about 20 feet from the boat ramp which would be as easy as possible for the GW to find if he mosey'd on down there.

I guess that explains him hunting next to the boat ramp. Maybe he was jug fishing with his new dekes.
I can only imagine what GW's have to put up with......

Who knows...maybe he knew maybe he didnt. Scooter and I had a guy walk up on use the first weekend. We didnt exactly chat it up with the guy. We were focused on hunting and kind of wanted the guy to get the hell out of there. We knew we were legal...maybe this dude thought he was and was just annoyed that some dude is walking up on his hunt...to me that's understandable.

I agree with marc on both posts. But I do think calling the GW is the right thing to do, I’m just not much into making trouble for folks, but that is just me.

Last year youth season saw a dude camping out west, obviously hunting, I had my son with me. I assumed he had kids with him in the tent. We started talking about how well we did, Ryan said he shot a limit, and the guy said “me and my brother in law only shot a few”.

I said you know it is youth weekend, and he said “You are kidding right?” I said “no” in a laughing way “let me show you” and I get my iphone out and going to show him online on the TPWD website, well he thinks I’m calling the GW and freaks out “Ok ok !! I believe you!!” lol. He packed up and bolted, I felt guilty that I should have called the GW, if he did not high tail it out of there I would have.

Did he say the aura of awesomeness surrounding the guy made him weak at the knees and that he wet himself? No, he didn't. It obviously wasn't The General.

For the record, TexasEd was not duck hunting. He was testing out new decoy patterns and only had his shotgun with him for protection against wild hogs.

I was using the split to earn brownie points with my wife. I took the kids out and let her sleep then hung Christmas lights.

Small price to pay to go on a guided trip this weekend.
