Do we have any trappers on board, I am wanting to learn more about it and the tactics so me and my two boys can play around with it. Thanks, YFIS, Miguel.

you can build your own live trap out of some rebar and some welded wire. have built several and they worked well for coons and possums. can of sardines for bait.

I a couple of trap lines years ago when i was in high school. That's before the aversion to spring-leg hold traps started to get a bad reputation...I agree with sardines as the best bait. What do you want to catch?

I kinda know the basics Im just wanting to get a little more detail. For instance I am interested in the coil spring traps what size is best for coons mind you the coons in our area max out around 20-25 lbs. (not very big) With coons is it best to burry them or leave them out in the open? And also fox, bobcat, and coyote. I know these 3 are a little more tricky because they are pretty smart. What sizes would I use for them and how is the best way to set them up. I know bobcat urine is one of the best for bobcats, what works well for coyotes and fox? I use to play around with live traps and everytime I used sardines I got skunks. I soon figured out that marshmallows are very good for coons. Just looking for the best trap selection and lures and set ups, like where would you set one up in the woods, on a fence line, along the creek, in the middle of a field? What is a good company to purchase traps from? And whats the going price so I don't get rapped. How far apart would you set each trap on a trap line and how far would you stretch your trapline? Keep in mind I don't want the professinal level set up because hides are very low at the moment, PLUS that is a whole different subject. I am just wanting something for me and my sons to do when we got a couple hours to burn up in the evenings. There is quite a bit of small wooded areas that run along creeks that run through and along the edges of town that are city property and we are always going on bb gun adventures in these spots and seeing fox, coons, bobcats, and lots of coyotes. Thanks, YFIS, Miguel.

I trapped bobcat and coyote with home made live traps. I perfer creeks( wilderness highways). I feel that a 2 foot by 2 foot by 4 or 5 foot is great. The smaller traps didn't get the same results. If you make them feel comfortable about getting in the trap and not feel so confined the better. Have a separate cage for the rooster and feed and water him. Put leaves in the trap and wear gloves so you don't leave scent. It's trail and error, but once you get it down it's a natural thing to do. Learn to read sign and tracks, Cats don't parade around like yotes and you could be in prime cat territory and not even know it. The rooster crows and brings them to you but try to make a good set and put it where they are going to be anyway. Good Luck!

My Grandpa got me into trapping a few years ago and I love it. I've found for coons dirt hole sets around ponds, side of banks in creeks, or right off trails work amazing with a little lure. For coons you make the hole big enough for them to be able to see in the hole. Another quick set is just the blind set. I just use logs or whatever I can find and funnel them to the trap. The best advice for blind sets; put a little stick right on the edge of the traps jaws towards the direction the coon will be coming from. They will step over the stick right into your trap, helps a lot. For coyotes and cats there are tons of ways best luck I've had was with a dirt hole set using an old cow skull as a backing. Hopefully I helped ya man. You'll have a blast.

For coons, sometimes you can wrap the traps pan with aluminum foil & place just at the waters edge. Something about that is irresistible to them & they have to grab thinking its a lil fishy.

1.5 coilsprings for coons or #11 DJ. Both are fine coon traps. For bobcats, fox, or coyote I prefer anything over a #3 that's laminated. There is a ton of information out there for beginners. Try trapperman.com and read through the archives. A wealth of knowledge there.

Me and my brother set/ran traps together. We always had to buy a couple of extra cans of sardines... some for the victims... some for us!!
