I have 100 acres that's very thick. I live in WV. I can't seem to find much good information about feeders anywhere else and know from watching TV shows that TX seems to use a lot of corn. I have established a central food plot to act as a destination plot. My dad and I saw three shooter bucks this year, but I'm trying to create the "ultimate whitetail paradise". I'm wondering if spin feeders with corn will help me? I don't think supplementing protein will help much since I only have 100 acres, but how about spin feeders helping to hold deer?
Any recommendations as far as placement and is it OK to have view of them from a stand if they're far enough that I can get in and out of stand w/o spooking deer (say 200 yds) but still get a shot if I wanted to?
I was looking at the boss buck feeders that hold about 1200 lbs.
Also, do the deer really get conditioned to the feeder and how long does it take to really hold deer on your property with the feeder? Would three feeders be overkill or should I stick with just one? Also, any reason why feeders in WV wouldn't work the same way they do in TX?

3 feeders would probably be a little much of that size, but could work with a corn feeder and a gravity style protein feeder. When the cod really sets in, the deer will love you for that protein feeder to try to put on their fat %.

Outdoor Freak welcome to the THF. I'm wondering if spin feeders with corn will help me? Corn feeders I assume are legal there and they are very good tools in deer hunting. The secret to corn feeders I like to say is kinda like a dinner bell or grandma steppin out on the back porch and yellin "soups on". That may seem silly but that the way it is, and as such you want them coming on your terms and conditions say first light and an hour or so before dark for feed times. Don't try to over feed them I run my feeders about 6-8 seconds to to three times a day. Any recommendations as far as placement and is it OK to have view of them from a stand if they're far enough that I can get in and out of stand w/o spooking deer (say 200 yds) but still get a shot if I wanted to? Yes hunt them that is exactly what they are for, as for distance I like at least 100 yds but I strictly rifle hunt. The Idea is to get the critters within range for a shot, bow hunters set up within 30 yds. or so. DO NOT worry that much about spooking the deer, they will return. How about spin feeders helping to hold deer. They will help but I think that food plot will help just as much or more. Keep this much in mind the fist time that spinner plate goes off it will scare the tar out of them but within a day or so they will figure out that when they here that soud food on the ground. Just like Grandma hollerin Soups On. As for branns and styles You can spend anywhere from slightly less than hundred dollors to several hundred dpending on your taste. I would suggest that starting of as cheap as possible to begin with and see how it works for you. I say this and I build and sell wich feeders. You could start as simply as getting a timer and mounting it to the bottom of a 5 gal bucket and them see how it works for you. GOOD LUCK & MERRY CHRISTMAS

Thank you guys for the information. Is there any reason that a feeder wouldn't work here in WV (where it is legal to bait) like on TV shows in Texas? Not sure if most of the shows I see like Tecomonte with David Morris and Foxworthy are high fences or not and if that makes a difference. So do you recommend putting it in thick cover--and should I put it in a bedding area or on the edge of it, or like you all do and put it down a long sendaro?

I would suggest on the edge of a tree line or along along a creek bed (away from any possible flooding). The idea is to locate it close to areas that deer travel so they can find it easily and don't have to go out of their way to get to it. Do Not put it in the wide open if you can help it. Deer like a sense of security close by so they escape quickly if needed. I have one on top of a hill in a cleared area between two tree coved areas and another at the base of a tree covered hill bordering an open pasture. Keep in mind the wind. Here in the hill country we have a south wind 75% of the season and the same the for south Texas, I normally set mine up west of my blind but every setup is different.

Feeders are amazing as long as they work consistently. Feed year round and scatter a few around your place and in about 2-4 weeks you will have deer coming in along with some other animals in the area. The key is, get a good brand that is dependable and put them on solar panels. Then feed year round round if possible. If not then start feeding a few months before deer season. Good luck.
Also, if your place is very thick you can put them 100 - 150 yards from your stand no problem. And could easily have 2 or 3. In West Texas 3 feeders on 100 acres would feed the same deer. But in denser parts of the woods you could actually get different groups of deer at each feeder you put out. I have 37 acres in Hill Country and get different deer at both feeders I have out.

The best advice I can give on feeders is, A. go with a good quality adjustable timer as the cheap photocell types rate fairly high on the suck scale as they're dependent on light to operate and tend to be pretty inconsistent. B. Use a varmint guard or the coons will tear your feeder all to crap and eat you out of house and home. C. Make sure the feeder you get seals well and either shake or stir the corn inside occasionally to prevent molded corn from moisture.
where we hunt, the deer have way too much food around to get excited about another feeder going off, but they tend to pull in the young deer and that can pull in the older deer. Good Luck!

I have sold at least two Winch feeders to folks who had the capsule. They stated that hogs had figured them (capsule feeder) out and were causing them grief. They may be very good I don't know just what I was told. Gravity feeders allow the deer and other critters to feed when THEY want to. This is exactly opposite of a spin feeder. Whith a spin feeder you dictate the time you want to feed.

Thankfully, I don't have to deal with hogs. However, I presume that even with a capsule feeder one could put up cattle gates or fencing around the capsule feeder as they would with other feeders. The biggest benefit I see of the capsule feeder is it's ability to hold 1000 lbs. and the fact you don't have to winch it down to fill it or climb a ladder to fill it. The BossBuck feeder is nice b/c it holds so much, 1200 lbs., but still you have to climb a ladder or you use their leaf blower attachment to fill it. The capsule looks pretty nice IMHO.
