it went for about 80 yards and he found a fresh fawn kill covered up under a mesquite bush. This was Monday morning, I got there Monday evening and we went out about 9:00 and the fawn was not there anymore. Can a bobcat drag a small deer that far?

no on the tracks, we both looked, seems the drag marks were erasing the tracks.

If it is a big cat, it will probably be gone but I am about to go buy an electronic caller and give it a try Tuesday.

big healthy bobcat would have no problems doing that. if it was a fawn like you speculated, a mt lion would have taken it much farther.

It could be either a lion or bobcat. I've seen them both kill and drag their pray a long way. I've also seen them kill and eat it right there. It just depends on how close cover is or where they feel safe. Next time leave the kill right where it is and get someone over with some cat hounds. The cat will usually revisit it that night and you'll have fresh tracks to run. Then you'll know for sure once you get it dead.

Seems like a cat to me if it was covered up. Usually that's what a cat will do. We have seen this on our game cameras. Bobcat finds a deer carcass, drags it just inside the woodline and covers it up with brush. Pretty neat to see. Then, she lays and watches it all night. When something shows up to claim it she plays guard dog. I'm gonna go look for the pics right now.

Found two of the pictures... Here's the cat getting ready for the drag. The camera ran out of batteries and we changed them on the 11th. We saw it's drag line and the carcass covered up in the woods. We backed out very quickly and here's what happened. A couple of days later it is back to check/eat. You can still see it's drag line. After that we had numerous pictures of animals coming in and checking the area. Everything including does, bunch of pigs, and about 10 different yotes. None of them actually went over to what it had covered up though. Maybe they smelled where it had marked it's meal or something. Still trying to find the pictures we have of it sitting in the woodline guarding the carcass.
