You boys are beating a dead horse. I cant eat horns i have tried!! Boiled, baked, fried, grilled, you name it, you just cant get them tender enough to chew. That's why they all end up in a pile at camp. No use for them. We hunted 3.5+ Y/o deer for the 10 years, cant say I have shot a < 13" wide 3.5 y/o buck, not going to say a spike wont make 3.5 years. Smallest 3.5 y/o buck not a spike, we took was 15" inside and was an EAST TEXAS BASKET RACK.
13" is easy to judge, 3.5 years old, FOR MOST NOT SO MUCH. So by this mentality I support the 13" ar rule. As MOST (not all) 2.5 y/o deer will not make 13" unless they will soon be a monster.
STOP BEATING A DEAD HORSE AND ENJOY WHAT IS LEFT IN THE SEASON.

first STX, what would you guess to be the natural buck:doe ratio of land not jacked with by humans....think it could maintain a 1:1 on it's own? It depends on lots of factors...but I would guess 1:1 would be a natural ratio on untouched land. Dr. Kroll told me once that fawns are born 52% bucks to 48% doe...how he found out I do not know. If this is true then rut mortalities would keep the ratios close to 1:1. I think predators on fawns would make this change from region to region as they are not going think which fawn to catch first just going to catch them. So if predators happen to catch more of one sex of fawn it could skew the ratio one way. Age has to factor in somewhere also but I do know that bucks have been documented to live up to 21 yrs of age in South Texas and I saw a radio collared doe that was tagged in the mid 80's at an unknown age still alive in 1999, so she was 14 yrs old at a minimum if she was a fawn tagged in 1985. I guess the only way to tell "natural ratio" would be to take a large HF ranch void of deer and put in the same number of buck/doe fawns and see what happens over time. Well, rifleman..... Go ahead let him have it. I can't b/c of the last part.....but if that were to happen you wouldn't take the results from it b/c the HF affected them.... telling you, that unfenced property I speak of might as well have a fence around it for the core deer....they can go somewhere if they wanted to and they do, but they still don't go where they can get shot...buck dispersal really doesn't happen, the does will run off the young bucks, but they go down in the lower bottoms usually and start coming back up when they get some age on them and can attempt to rule the roost. Well at least inform him of how Dr Kroll gets those fawn numbers. I think u said it was a bunch of meth tweekers our something. But I forget. Oh yea....... I luv ARs

Forestry students at SFA working on their Master's is where he gets most of his and from well managed ranches...some in South Tx, some in the most prestigious hunting grounds you will come across in East Tx (Google 'Boggy Slough Monster'). We have had dealings with him and some of his recommendations have royally messed up hunting on some places in our area....noone's word is the gospel when dealing with this....that's why there are so many biologist out there running theories trying to make a name for themselves to they can live comfortably.

they restrict diet plans as well....good choice of lean protein taken away from a lot of folks..... and besides, a buck that will never make 13" gets taken out by mother nature in a very cruel manner....could be dying, eaten alive by coyotes while bambi looks on to see grandpappy go in such fashion.... every deer deserves the chance to get shot for a quick clean ending to a good life any other way would just be cruel and insensitive

I think I'll file a complaint for discrimination on the over 13" deer. Although I don't know if you could call it "profiling" because you can't really judge width that way. Hmmmmm....

Well y'all carry on this great thread as I am about to go East for the weekend in search of a doe (we have 1 doe permit left), or a spike or a buck with at least a 13" antler spread!

Let's be honest here, Curly. If you see a possum or coon, it's going in the pot.
