Well from past experience and if you have used them you will notice no exit hole. Plenty of killing power no doubt about that with as much if not more knock down, but with no exit hole the tracking job becomes very difficult. The entry hole takes more time to start bleeding enough to track. If you did not get good visual on which way the deer went it may be hard to pick up the blood trail. With a good exit wound the blood starts to flow instantly which makes tracking very simple. Now this is not always accurate but it is more often than not. So its just my way of thinking nothing wrong with different views.

behind the shoulder is the most text book shot. If a deer is 100 yards or less I go for a neck shot most of the time. I got a new 7mmWSM this year. I have killed three deer with it. 2 neck shots and one heart/lung shot.Shots have been 40-80 yards. All three droped where they were standing. One thing with a neck shot. I like to shoot towards the base of the neck. I think that at some point you could miss the spine if you shoot too close to the head. I love a drop in your tracks shot. Thats why I opt for neck shots most of the time. The real answer to where do I shoot is where a kill shot is presented. I do something different when I need too. sometimes you are only presented with a certain shot. Then you have to make up your mind fast. As long as its a lethal one and I feel good about it I slowly squeeze the trigger. Actually that is incorrect. The closer you get to the shoulder,on the neck, the higher the ratio of soft-tissue to bone you get. In other words as you move down the neck towards the shoulder, the more there is to hit that isn't bone..

Never shoot a deer in the neck? What are you basing that on? I think all kids or inexperienced hunters should go for the neck. It is a hit or miss shot with no tracking job. You do not risk pulling your shot a few inches and making a gut shot or any other bad shot placement. Just know with a neck shot the deer will not bleed out as good so you will need to cut the deers throat for proper bleeding. Now with that said if you are shooting a big buck and want a shoulder mount your taxidermist would not like the shot placement it can be fixed just takes more time. I also bow hunt most of the time so behind the shoulder is a must. Rifle always neck shot if it is less than 100 yds. ballistic tips should only be used for neck shots jmo Again incorrect, I have had to turn my dogs onto plenty of neck shot deer. Miss bone and major vessels, and you have a running deer.

I have neck shot alot of deer. And I saw eviedence on the first lease on neck shot that went on. Guy shot a 10 pt. in the neck Thanksgiving on the lease. Never found the deer. Then right after Christmas he shot the same deer and it had the old wound that was healing up from the previous neck shot. Wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't seen it. Deer was in bad shape health wise.

ALWAYS, ALWAYS "SHOOT A DEER BEHIND THE SHOULDER WHEN POSSIBLE!" You owe it to the animal to make a Lethal & Humane Kill. I agree with your concerns to NOT Waste Meat on Antlerless Deer so if you will wait until your Doe steps forward with the BACKSIDE LEG, your expanding bullet (along with bone fragments) will only take out flesh & ribs on the exiting side. Try it, you'll be pleased...

I shoot every deer just behind what we call the knuckle, or the dark spot at the point if the shoulder. I taught my kids and my wife to do the same.
I didnt see but a cousin told me about shooting one thru the neck, hit a bit high and cut the tendons along the top of the neck bone, the deer's head dropped between it's front legs and it was off to the races. He said it was a good half mile before they caught up to it to finish it off.
Not me or mine, We'll just keep shooting behind the shoulder and if needed, walk the extra few steps to get the deer.
And it is pretty obvious that those that say they shoot their does in the neck and their bucks behind the shoulder put little value on their does.

My sons and I shoot small cal. guns, .243, .223, and I shoot a 22-250. I've taught each to shoot for the lungs and heart. They may not all drop in the tracks, but they don't go far.

Love the little spot about ballistic tips too, I guess the 30-40 deer (including mule deer) I've seen shot with Ballistic Tips that exited after hits in the shoulder/lung area were just flukes. Yes, ballistic tips are a fast expanding bullet, but only good for neck shots? Wow, this place cracks me up sometimes! Bill

I've only lost 1 deer in my life. It was only the 2nd behind the shoulder shot I've taken. I've NEVER lost and NEVER had to track one that I shot in the neck. I use 150-165 grain Remington Core Lokt ammo in my 30-06.

i've put my dog on plenty of neck shot deer, and a few head. if you find them it's not pretty or cool, but i can tell you that it will be a tough track and a long one. once you've had to track down a deer shot through the sinuses or jaw you'll agree i think. behind the shoulder only for me, and i think that the advice about letting the far leg go forward is sound. i also think that the angle of the shot has a lot to do with how much meat is damaged. i agree that the dead or missed neck shot statement is a myth.

i shot 2 in the head last year and i have no problems taking that shot. but this year i am very greatfull to be hunting by invitation with a great member of the forum. i have only killed 5 deer 2 i shot in the head, 2 i shot in the chest between the shoulders that were looking at me and wouldnt go broadside and the other one i shot behind the shoulder and was the only one i had to track. i like drt. i dont want to go out on an invitation hunt and make the land owner regret he invited me by taking bad shots.
I will get off in a little bit

i like to take out both shoulders If that doesn't line up then its just behind the shoulders. Look at the anatomy that Rustler posted. The heart is alot lower than most hunters think. They shoot high behind the shoulder and have no blood trail. All the blood is on the inside from blowing out the lungs.
