Me and the guys on the deer lease have been having discussions about spikes. Some people say shoot all of them. Some say shoot the old ones. Some say only shoot the ones with long tines. My question is when do you cull them. If you say shoot the ones with long horns, whats the difference between a 18 month old short tine spike and a 18 month old cow horn spike?

nothing, except the 18month old put on more horn than the other..... cull them when the costs to feed them outweighs keeping them around.

I shoot what's legal. So if I see a spike I shot it.

If you keep your hair short and your mouth shut, things tend to run a lot smoother.

All studies (except the one tpwd uses) show that there is no way to tell what a spike buck will become at 1.5 years old. There are two many factors that could contribute to why hes a spike besides genetics. So let the 1.5 year old ones walk and shoot any spike 2.5 or older. Which shouldnt be many.

its really more about your specific plan for mgmt than a straight kill or no kill on spikes.
we have 23 bucks to kill this year on 1900 acres, so we are trying to target the weakest in each age class.
so that 2.5 yr old basket rack will get whacked since he is lesser than his buddies in the same age class.
old and mature are preferred, but if you have high populations, then you will likely have to shoot some young ones every year too.

"did you do that?"

Exactly. I have one ranch whose policy is to take mature 8-points (3.5 years) as management. They have muy grande bucks. I have another where we're taking some very young deer because he is so overpopulated he's afraid of a die off. It's all part of the management scheme.

Probably 90% of all spikes are 1.5yrs old . No way to tell what they will do from 2.5 yrs on. I dont shoot yearling spikes(1.5yr olds). 2.5yr old spikes

A 1.5 yr old won't be breeding with the does anyway.

Our land owner says that if a 1.5 year old buck does not have a split, then he will never be a good buck. He may turn into a small basket rack one day, but that is still a cull. Therefore, bang.

No brow tines on a 2.5 or older is almost always a cull in his book as well. And since he's the owner/boss.... Bang.

Had a biologist tell me why let a spike eat the food that a forked buck at the same age could and that the spike could possibly turn into a good buck but the same forked buck with the same feed will always be better.
