This is my first year to seriously bow hunt, got the bow last year but was too busy chasing ducks. Went out opening weekend and saw a few good deer and finally got my first chance to take a hog with a bow. I made a great shot at 20 yards, arrow went all the way through except for the fletchings. Found my arrow with the broadhead still attached with about 5 inches missing off the back. No blood trail, no hog. This past week I had another chance at a hog. Popped her right behind the shoulder. This time the arrow didn't go all the way through I could see the broad head sticking out one side and the fletching sticking out the other. Once again not a drop of blood, and no hog. I know these hogs are dead and that is the main thing but, I want to find my arrows as well as the hog! I am using G5 Montecs and I am done with them. If they can't draw blood then it's time for something new...I'm thinking Swhacker...

Where did you hit the Hog and how big was it? The last Hog that I shot took about 20 seconds before any blood came out of him. I only know this because I shot it in an open area so I got to watch the whole thing. Sometimes the blood pools up in the body and takes a bit more time/distance before you get a blood trail started.

Seems like the fatter the hog, the less blood too. The fat will essentially seal up and the blood will be minimal. I shot a fat boar this weekend and (like Outdoorsman81's experience) I watched him. He ran the first 15 yards and then walked until he collapsed at about 40 yards. I went over his trail and there were only specks of blood for the majority of the way... This was with a very lethal shot. He was about 200+ lbs and didn't go far. Plus, a shot lower in the cavity will drain more blood. That being said, if you're not confident in your gear it is definately time to make a change.

If you use slick tricks or grizz tricks you wont have any problem finding blood.

I have used G5 Montecs for years now and never had a problem. Hogs can be extremely tough to kill with a bow. I have found that you need to hit them a little higher and farther back than on a deer. If you aim at a big hog like it is a deer chances are you won't find it. If the shot placement isn't right then it really won't matter what broadhead you use...

hogs just do not bleed very well generally. i have shot a 350 lb hog quartering away and he only ran 30 yards but not one drop of blood. If i get my arrow back after shooting a pig, thats good enough for me. Also my dad has had some great success with the G5 montecs, he likes them because they are tough enough to use on hogs and not bend or break.

Its probably your shot placement and the fact that hogs don't bleed that much. Montechs are notorius for shooting true and also not being sharp unless you get the CS models out of the pack. I think you will have better luck with a Stryker, which are generally sharper. I would seriously look into the Slick Trick magnums or a much cheaper brand if you are going to shoot hogs.

I just bought some Montec CSs thinking I'd try them out so I'm interested in this thread. I've shot two hogs one using Muzzy 100 and one with Muzzy MX-3 100 and both hogs bleed bad and did not run but 30 - 50 yards and fell over dead. Shot both right behind the front shoulder (like clipped the start of the shoulder) right about where I think the heart should be. Complete passthrough on both and awesome blood trails on both.
Both times my broadheads were completely messed up which I'd expect. I'm just curious how some others hold up and the CSs look good but I've read positive about Slick Tricks. BIL swears by them.

Thanks for the advice! I hit both hogs behind the shoulder, according to the website posted i need to go a little towards the neck. My buddy has swhacker broad heads and he shout a decent sized hog and it had plenty of blood. Both hogs I shot at were 175 to 200lbs.

Very informative. I've shot about 10 or so hogs with a rifle and I usually shoot them square in the shoulder or in the head. I'm bow hunting alot more now days so this will come in handy if I get a shot with a bow.

killed my first two pigs in the same setting this year huge 250+ sow was quartering away. so after playing that little arrow placement game with the deer that yall turned me on to, i shot her right in front of the ham. Arrow came out of her arm pit on oppisite side. She ran 50 yards and died. Then one stayed at feeder and was facing me head down. shot right between the shoulder blades. Lights out in 40 yards lots of blood trail. Both were with grim reaper expandables. Which in my opinion are super sharp.

I have killed three deer with my G5 montecs with great results. Though I have not shot pigs with them they look like a strong tip that will stand up to bone etc. I have had a problem keeping them super sharp and am going to swtich to the G5 Stryker.

havent shot a deer with the G5 yet only pigs. I am hunting in some thick woods so if they run and I don't have a blood trail i'm not going to find them. I NEED A BLOOD TRAIL!

On the subject of confidence. I am most confident in what I shoot more accurately. I've switched to Magnus Stingers from mechanicals and feel VERY confident about my accuracy with them. Also, It's a fixed blade so I feel like I am getting the best of both worlds. (Accuracy and removing the chance that something could go wrong upon blades deploying).
I have yet to get a shot opportunity though. I guess the true test is yet to come but I am very confident that I can make a good shot with them.

Also, on the blood trail subject. You will get a better blood trail if you get a pass through. Especially if you are shooting from an elevated stand.
If you got good pass throughs with the Montec and feel like you are accurate with them then I don't know if I would change if I were you.

Hate to say it, but it's prolly user's error and not the broadhead itself. I'm not a fan of G5, however, I have killed hogs with them. If you want a bh that will open holes in animals, give Grim Reapers and Blood Runners a look.

I have used G5's for five years and they work well for me. They do have issues with blood trails on occassion but most of my deer never get 75 yards so tracking has not been a problem for most. I love their penetration and power so I stick with them. I shot two hogs with the same arrow and broadhead 15 minutes apart and had complete pass thru on both. Great blood trail on the first one, lost the second one after about 100 yards in the thick brush.

I have been using them for several years now and love them. I haven't had a reason that I could switch from them except that they are not as sharp as I like out of the package. I sharpen mine fairly easy and I'm good to go with them. Interesting to hear you had problems with them but maybe it was shot placement that had a lot to do with it too. Hard to really tell unless you got it on video and actually recovered the hog.

G5 Strykers all the way. I have made a few less than perfect shots and they have never done me wrong. Good size wounds and pretty good blood trails. Several kills with one set of blades as well!

Shot montecs for a year. I did find that they did not leave a blood trail that I was happy with, so I shoot slick tricks now and am really happy with em.

i think all blood trials depend on shot placement. the most recent hog i shot was with a 12g slug an i almost thought i missed some how! it didn't drop blood till it ran about 15 yards. the lil 60 lbs sow still ran about 75 yards after the slug went through her

I have shot two hogs (one 200 lb boar) with a G5 Montec broadhead. I have not had any problem recovering the hogs. I will say this though - I had alot of trouble recovering my hogs shot until I got on the www.texasboars.com website and discovered that you can't shoot a hog in the same location as a deer and expect to recover it. I am a BEGINNING hog hunter - never shot one with a bow until this season. That website has a wealth of information. A hog's vitals are in a different spot in the chest cavity than a deer. For one thing, a hog's lungs look alot smaller compared to a deer. You can hit a hog up high behind the shoulder and not even hit a lung. Once I started hitting them low behind the "elbow" of the front legs I started recovering them. You still won't get a good blood trail like a deer, but they usually don't go as far as a deer when hit properly and they are usually easy to find. I was a very frustrated hunter of those things until I got on that website. It will advance your learning curve by ALOT.

The shot placement was very good on the animals and still didn't get good blood.
