The 4" fletching is supposed to provide more stability such as when shooting broadheads. I don't have any proof one way or the other but my personal experience is that FOR ME, the 4" fletching shoots more consistently. Maybe it compensates a little for poor form, release, etc.

Besides, I shoot a long, heavy wood shaft with a heavy broadhead so saving an iota of weight doesn't matter to me.

I assumed you meant the difference between similar fletchings. I also thought you meant feathers but now realize you probably mean vanes. You can buy vanes in almost endless varieties. Some are thin and almost transparent. Some are thick and tough. I have a bunch of 2" (or 1-7/8")curly vanes I bought from the UK with fancy holographic designs on them much like you can get on dart flights. They don't even glue on the shaft. They are affixed with 2-sided tape. You certainly can't compare them with the Easton vanes. Some vanes have really odd profiles. I've shot some that were hollow in the middle. The point is that as with all things, you have to be careful how you compare.

One last note, if you look at the arrows used by the hosts of TV hunting shows, I think you'll see that they nearly all shoot 4" or even 5" vanes regardless of what kinds of bows they shoot. Whatever you think of their personalities, they hunt a lot, they kill a lot, their livelihood depends on their success, and I think their choice of equipment is important to note. You can question things like bows, sights, and accessories because they are usually advertising them somewhat during the show. How many times have you seen the hunter actually advertise his vanes? He uses them because they work; not because he's going to devote part of his show to them.

Just my respectful opinion.

great arlo line.
I think the 2" vanes are a higher profile,Blazers are crazy popular as are the short NAP quick spins.
I like 5.5" nana cut.
just be though.

My wife is just a little on the flashy side. Here are some of her vanes she uses for 3D. They stand out just a little.
