You should spend just as much or more on the scope as you did on the gun. So if I buy a $700 rifle and put a $400 scope on it then I have a cheap scope? BTW, what gun did you have that VXII on? Unless it was a really cheap gun I doubt it cost more which makes me wonder why you didn't follow your own advice...

I like the 4X12 VX II. Reason being, silly as it may be, when I am at the range shooting 100yds I can see my POI rather clearly at x12, not so with the x9. Don't need a spotting scope or partner to figure out my POI. Also when I have the time to adjust to X12 shooting critters I can get up close and personal on the shorter shots < 150yds. Up close and personal makes me very very confident. I have never taken a shot over 200yds.
Having said all that, 95% of my shots are <150yds and are made with a mid range power on my scope so 3x9 would be adequate.
I guess x12 in low light could be an issue but I have never been in that situation.

all my scopes are 3x9....but i wish i had a 4x12 on my .22-250.
just didn't find the scope i wanted in 4x12, and in needed a scope ASAP.
most of my shots are around 80-125 yards, so the nikon 3x9 tht i wound up with works fine.
For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

I prefer 2X7's, 3X9's, and 3.5x10's. The bigger scopes hinder the balance an handling of the rifle, and are not necessary for deer at the ranges that I shoot. But it really is just a personal choice. I am a fan of the 2X7 for many applications the weight and balance sure come into play especially on lightweight rifles. Most of my shots are taken at less than 200 yards and my go to gun, a 7mm08 with a 2X7 I have shot 2 inch groups at 300. I do like the higher magnification on longer range rifles and have 2.5X16 and 4X16 on them, it helps in large wheat fields and soybean fields. While the higher magnification is not really required for making the shots at extended range (300 to 500 yards) it does help in judging the antlers.

Nikon Buckmaster SF Matte - Riflescope 4.5-14 x 40 BDC (Bullet Drop Compensating) reticle and adjustable side focus.
I wear progressive bifocals and find having the extra focusing ability really helps. No need for a spotting scope at the range out to 100 yds. only about $300. I love it!
