With so many things that can bite you or eat you in South Texas...what is the all around best side-arm to carry on you?

I carry my Glock 9X19. My opinion is that accuracy is overrated when you're talking about walking through the brush or woods at night. While it's highly unlikely something is gonna ever "come after you", I know that in that situation my nerves wouldn't be any good at all. Therefore, I'd prefer to have as many bullits as possible. Not so much worried about shooting something as I am about scaring it away.
When I walk to the stand, I've got my rifle over one shoulder, a flashlight in one hand, and my Glock in the other. My rifle is loaded, but not chambered. I figure if I really need to aim at something and worry about accuracy, I'll just chamber that rifle. That's another reason I'm not concerned about the accuracy with the pistol.

a .357 with rat shot is hard to beat for snakes.
anything bigger than that i'ma shoot with the rifle
For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

Personally i like to carry a Ruger Single Six in .22LR I carry the same gun but use the mag cylinder. I keep a snake charmer in the truck for the big rattlebugs but most time I just pop them with the mag.

I wanna say something that is air cooled, belt fed, select fire, but will settle for something on the order of a S & W 586/686 or a high capacity semi auto in a major caliber.
When I go on the ranches out here nowadays I have a Sig 1911 or maybe Glock 26 on me and a Rossi, lever action, carbine in 357 mag in the truck.

I would go with the taurus judge Had one and wasn't impressed. If you are worried about something "getting" you, anything 9mm and above would be fine. Personally, my rifle will stop anything in the country and I am much more likely to hit with it. If I could carry an AR15 around town I might not even carry a concealed handgun.

I either carry my Kimber 1911 45 auto or my S&W 629 44 magnum. Both work great for me.

Down in south Texas,I carry my Glock model 22 in .40 caliber and I killed the biggest rattler I've ever seen with it. Never got to see how long it was because the brush was too thick to reach it and I didn't know if it had relatives around but it looked as big around as my arm, and was a big target which wasn't hard to hit.
I carry my trusty 12 gauge Mossy 500 pump slugs/buckshot in the truck and whatever rifle I'm hunting with that day.
Oh and my SKS if I'm really skeered!
I usually travel pretty lightly armed!

Thursday at 12:45 PM #33 Once i learned that i didn't "NEED" to kill something, and that if i did kill something all the fun stopped and work began, i was a much better hunter.

Since it will be for just finishing shot or a "holy sheitz" moment where I need to unload the clip in a hurry, I carry my Taurus PT99, 9mm. Admittedly 9mm wont do much on a charging hog but I'm hoping it'll persuade him to change direction with 15 hot lead hitting him.

You walk to your stand with a pistol in your hand? Where do you hunt? I don't carry a sidearm when hunting, never seen the need...I just walk around snakes and such as I don't see them worth screwing with my hunt...

Main reason I do is we have had a problem with wild dogs in the past. A neighbor had some get around him when he was in the stand and had to kill two of them before the rest ran off. Said he fired in the ground three times, but that didn't scare them off. They were likely rabid. Regardless, I hunt alone and there are only 2-3 people who would even be able to find me if something happened, so I pretty much stay in self-protect mode.

Rabid animals usually don't work very well together...just not very team oriented. Sounds like you have a real problem there, I'd call in some back-up and eliminate them before it gets farther out of hand...
