I only have a 12 gauge at the moment as was borrowing a rifle the past 2 years (lucky me) but my buddy ended up needing some cash and sold it...
I am going to go deer hunting next week...My stand is about 50 yards from the feeder but the deer normally come in by the stand at about 30 yards then go to the feeder...Do not know much about buck shot, will it take a deer down ethically and what is the farthest you can take a shot?
Thanks for the help...

I've killed deer out to 80-90 yards with 3" 00Buckshot out of a 28" barrel. Haven't had one run over 30-40 yards after being hit. With the range you are shooting, you should not have a problem taking a deer down.

shot my first one with a 20 gauge slug. Then shot a pig at ten yards with a 3" 12 gauge slug. Both turned out very well. never used buckshot

I would use slugs. My dad prepared for a public hunt that is shot gun only. He was drilling a pie plate at 75 yards so that should give you plenty of range and much better knock down power.

Ive never killed anything over 30yds with buckshot, always been afraid of wounding it after 30yrds and that is the distance that I patterned my gun, so I know its good to that point.

Did anyone else think they were gonna see a picture of a dead deer on this post?? LOL, I mean it says Buck Shot!! Guess I am to literal, now I know where my 3 year old son gets it!!
I have killed a scrub buck several years ago with a 3" Slug from a 12 Guage Rem. 870. It was a Walmart Special!! Seriously, I bought it at Walmart... What I remembered most about that experience was not that I crumbled that buck as he was in a dead run at about 100 yards, however it was the kick from firing that 3" slug!!! " like a mule comes to mind "
Slugs are the ticket, but be ready for a decent jarring!

I've used 00 and 000 on pigs as well as slugs. My first deer was a very big 7 point in Case County using 3" mag 00 buck. One pellet hit the deer in the temple. Yep I got lucky:) For the situation for the situation your presented I would use old school 2 3/4 foster type slug. It will drop em in their tracks and the shot is more than doable at 50. If you must use BS I would use 3" 00. I prefer the non copper plated lead for deer, shoot em in the face at no more than 25 to 30 yards. YMMV:)
It ain't easy being me.

Should I be concerned about shooting a slug out of my shotgun, or are all the barrels ok to shoot them?? I can not recall my exact choke at this moment, but it can not be removed...Can this cause a safety issue...
Thanks in advance...

I thought it was illegal to use buckshot for deer hunting.
I checked the regs and don't see anything that says you can't use buckshot.

Fosters were designed to be shot out of smooth bore shotguns. If you have a fixed choke I bet it will be fine. Experts claim the more open the choke the better. That being said I wouldnt be afraid to shoot a foster typer lead slug out of a regular full choked shotgun. Now I wouldnt shoot one out of a turkey choke or anything tighter than a common full choke. I bet your fixed shotgun is modified but check to be sure. Modified would be fine.

I thought it was illegal to use buckshot for deer hunting. Seems Ive heard that before too but cant confirm. I know in 1978 they were legal in Cass County.

My gun is a winchester 1200...It says Full choke on the side...It also says 2 3/4 chamb. I just bought 3" 00BK buck shot and 2 3/4 slugs...Wanted to try both...The 3" bs will chamber, but I did not try to fire since my barrel only says 2 3/4...Does this mean I can not shoot the 3"? Sorry for dumb questions, just want to make sure I am safe, I get the best kill shot I can, and I do not mess up my shotgun...
Thanks in advance...

Thanks in advance... It fits now but after you shoot, it would be too long to eject.

Do not shoot the 3" it is not recommended. Stay with the 2 3/4" shells or use a slug.

Thanks in advance... The box should tell you but generally you want your smooth bore barrel and the improved cycliner. You may also want to check you gun manufacture. Remington for example has specific information they recommend for every type of game.

Thanks in advance... Hey there are not dumb questions on here. If there were I would have been crowned the king of dumb along time ago. Investments in weapons and desire to ethically take animals mean you should ask anything you want.

I hunt thick brush in Jasper county, I shoot a mossberg 835 ulti-mag with 3" 00 buck, I've shot deer at 50 yrds and they dropped. I'm a firm believer in buckshot, the other gun I use in the brush is a Ruger .44 mag carbine, its a sweet lil gun, the bullets are heavy enough to pass through the brush as long as its not a big limb.
