I'm looking to buy a set of rattles. I don't have any antlers that I can use.

My buddy uses a bag type rattle and likes it.

Is there a certain type I should get? How much do they typically cost?

I've never rattled before so any tips are greatly appreciated

I bought a set of the Knight and Hale pack-rattling system ($20 at BPS). I had some antlers but I thought I'd give these a try b/c I can keep in them easily in my backpack at all times without them making noise.

On opening weekend I spent one afternoon rattling and called up a 7 point. It takes a little bit to learn how to use them though. In fact, I think my experience with real horns helps b/c I know the sound and cadence that I'm looking for.

Whatever you use, give it time to learn how to do it. I think rattling is one of the most exciting ways to hunt. But it takes practice and patience, both in how you do it to where you position yourself in the field.

Buy a rattling bag. I have found them for as low as $5.00 and they work as well as any other type of rattle and you are not going to smash your fingers with them.

knight & hale rattle pack. Small and easy to use plus lots of variations in possible sounds. Bag not as realistic I think.

and I would hurry up and use them, running out of time.....

I have an extra set I'd give ya but shipping probably be too much. Academy has a nice rattle bag set up that just came out I believe from Primo's. $12.99 .... I just picked one up for this weekend.

Get you some synthetic antlers over a rattle bag. I just don't like em that much. I like rattling with antlers. The same way I prefer to use my coyote call over a digital speaker setup.

I saw a guy at the Trophy Hunters show this year had invented one that part straped to his leg so it could be operated 1 handed looked cool and sounded pretty good. Wish I would remember the thing or the guys name.

Academy sells a rattling horn set with the grunt call included for $20. The call is not that great but I am having some good success with the horns. My opinion on rattling is it all depends on timing and how hard you are rattling. I think the bag only has one tone. With the actual horns, you can go soft during pre-rut, and full blown pounding during the peak of the rut.

Which ever type rattle call you choose bag or synthetic antler, take it slow. If deer are really responsive you'll know pretty quick. If they are not, don't go overboard all over the place, you'll just end up with a bunch of educated deer. What region are you going to be using them in? I have found the best time to rattle is about 2 weeks before the peak rut and again about 2 weeks after.

Knight & Hale's Pack Rack is the real deal - it sounds great and the compact size makes for easy carry in and out of the field.
