What are the opinions of the .17HMR? I am thinking of adding another rimfire rifle to my bag of tricks and was curious how this round compared to the .22WMR.
One of my concerns is that it will go the way of the rem 5mm and my new gun will become obsolete.

Welcome to The Forum. There are several folks on here that own and shoot the 17HMR and like it. My only observations on it are from folks who have brought them out on the Javelina hunts to use on the jackrabbits. From what I have seen, if you are planning on using it on squirrel or cottontail, you will probably want to restrict yourself to head shots, as the jackrabbits I have seen body shot were pretty mangled. I JUST BOUGHT ONE LOVE SHOOTING IT, PRETTY DARN ACCURATE, ALSO HAVE A 22 MAG IMO THEY ARE USED FOR ABOUT THE SAME THINGS... I CAN'T GET OVER THINKING OF THE 17 AS A HIGH SPEED BB GUN....I SHOT A TURKEY WITH IT AND WASN'T IMPRESSED BUT THEN I DID MISS HIS HEAD AND IT WAS ABOUT A 90 YARD SHOT. ALL IN ALL I LIKE IT BUT THEN AGAIN I LIKE NEW GUNS. I'D SAY DON'T BUY ONE IF YOU HAVE A 22 MAG UNLESS YOU JUST HAVE MONEY TO BURN.

Thanks for all the input. I don't have a 22 mag, but several 22 lr's. I was looking for something with a little more punch and was trying to decide between the .17HMR and the .22WMR. The only reason I was looking at the .17HMR was because it is fairly new, but was wondering how it stood up against the .22 Mag.
Thanks

i like the .17 hmr,to me it has a little more "POP" than the 22wmr. mine is also deadly accurate, and i have less than 250 bucks in it including scope and trigger/bed job.
For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

I just aquired a 17. I just wish the price of ammo on this round would come down. Pricey IMO

The .17 hmr is way more flat shooting. I have shot a few bobcats and foxes (in the shoulder) all have ran more than 25 yds, but all were retrieved. I say it is way more accurate than the 22mag, just because it is flat shooting. I used to have a 22mag but have got rid of it do to the 17 hmr. I could have shot the varmints previously mentioned in the head, but wanted to see what it would do with body shots. As far as a jack rabbit gun it knocks them on their butts, but doesn't blow them up like a deer rifle with hollow points.

I have a Winchester 94/17 lever action. It's a blast to shoot but as someone else stated, I wish ammo would come down in price.

I had thought about getting one but I checked out how high the ammo is and you can get Wolf 223 cal. ammo, 500 rounds for the same price as 500 rounds of .17 HMR. http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templa...MainCatcat20712223 is a whole lot more bang for your buck. I've got a .22 for plinking and a .17 HMR just doesn't make a lot of sense to me!

Well I went out calling with a buddy of mine and shot my first bob cat ever with a Marlin .17HMR.. After I shot it for the first time I fell in love with it. It is such an accurate gun. Just shoot for the head and you have nothing to worry about..And hitting the head of something with a .17HMR is like shooting the side of the barn. I would reccommend a .17 HMR anyday :0 But like stated earlier ammo is pretty high.

I've been thinking about a 17 as well but I think I'll get the 17HM2 as it will just be for paper and prairie dogs and the ammo is much cheaper.

The 17HMR is truly accurate and packs a significant hit when the bullet is placed where it will be lethal- We use the 17HMR on wild hogs to 200lbs, within 40 yds, with the bullet placement just a tad behind the ear.. "Pop goes the weasel and down goes the boar-" IT IS AMAZING !!!

I have a .17 and a .22 wmr. I like the 17 for jackrabbits. A hit with the 17 in the torso and the fur flies and the jack stays. Sometimes with the 22 mag the jack runs for a ways. I'm surprised to hear you all kill such big animals with the 17. I had to take 2 sometimes 3 shots on big boar coons to nail them down. That's when I added a 204 Ruger to the battery. Tremendous caliber for all of the above. JMO

I'll take the 22 WMR anyday over the .17
Ammo is less expensive and the ballistics aren't that significantly different if you're shooting at 100 yds or less, which most folks do for squirrels, rabbits, coons, and occsional coyotes.
I have a Sako in .223 and have thought about getting a .204, but for the same reasons mnetioned above, can't justify the expense and lack of space in my gun cabinet to 'spring' for the .204, though it's a nice caliber.
Just my .02

Everyone that has shot my .17 has either gone and bought one or plans to. That gun is just fun to shoot. More expensive to shoot than the .22's but more fun. I bought the Henry Golden Boy.

I have the same gun in the synthetic stock with a Bushnell banner dusk to dawn scope, nice to know it will take a hog at close range. Behind the ear, huh! Are you using CCI Game points or FMJ's

It doesn't have to be close range. These guns are like laser beams to 150 yards. I have been shooting these from a blind at 50. I use the 17gr Hornady V-max. They seem to be the most consistant. If I was going to shoot big pigs I would probably go to the 20gr FMJ. But keep your shot in the ear and you won't have any problems. They fall right in their tracks.

took mine out yesterday for a day of shooting, again its a great round for practice, not really economical, but it will keep your shooting sharp!

Bought the Marlin 917v a week ago and used it for the first time this past weekend. All jackrabbits and raccoons, longest shot I took at an animal was around 100 yards. Extremely flatshooting, loud *thump* every time, and jacks and big boar coons dropped stone cold dead at 100 yards. Much more pop than the .22, but nowhere near as much of a beating as shooting a .223 over and over all evening. I'm ready to get an opportunity with it on a coyote or bobcat to see what it can do.
But I'm gonna be a diamond someday
