I'm going spotlighting in a few weeks at my lease for hogs. I will be using a .303 British rifle with 150gr bullets or 180gr bullets. I will probably be shooting between 50 and 250 yds. Will it be enough gun to drop a 200 lbs hog with a shot behind the shoulder? Also my 13 year old son who is 5'7 and weighs 127lbs will be shooting the gun and i will be driving. Will this be to much gun for him? Also how does the caliber compare to other more modern day rifles like .300 mag, 30-06, and .270? Thank You in advance

That is plenty, you do not have to have a big gun to kill a hog, it all shot placement just like anything else. Hard to say about your son, depends on his experience as well.

The .303 British is more than enough gun for hogs. The .303 is still quite popular in eastern Canada for close cover moose hunting. The old 215 grain load was perfect for this type of hunting. You asked how the .303 compares to more modern common cartridges. I would place the .303 in the same category as the .308 Winchester. I have owned a couple Lee Enfields in the past and I generally shot 180 grain Winchester factory ammo and 174 grain military surplus.

I read that when hunting at night (spotlighting) you first must inform the local GW.......

I read that when hunting at night (spotlighting) you first must inform the local GW....... its not mandatory that you inform them but its courteous if you dont want a confrontation. Especially since its early into deer season. But its not the law. Remember to have your license on you though.

As shot behind the shoulder will be to far back . Hog engine room is between the shoulders not behind them like a deer . Shoot thru the shoulders ,or 2" back and 3" below the ear . 303 is plenty for DRT. Use anything but hollow points and you"ll be fine.

Knife will get a hog too. Placement is the key as stated.
