22-250 because it is just plain fun!
7mm-08, because it is new to me and needs to get bloody...
7mm rem mag, because my 30-06 was lonely in the safe...
30-06 because it serves me very well and has been doing so since I was big enough to shoulder it...
really wanting to add another rifle to the safe, thinking something 338. or larger... like the looks of the 375 ruger...
what ever comes next on my list will be because I NEEDED (wanted) something that is looked at as over kill

Versatile, Cheapest big bore round, very accurate, very reliable, readily available, trained with it A LOT... and it kills everything in North America DRT... Have many calibers and this is the one that I take along the most. Just flat out deadly on WTs with my 150 grain hand loads. I LOVE THE .308
High fence, low fence, no fence, it really doesn't matter as long as you're hunting!

.30-30 because I could afford in in 1969 for about $70 at the Medallion Store on NW Hwy in Dallas. It stopped the deer last year at about 100 yds.
Opening day I was holding, not shooting, my son's .308 because the blind I was setting on had from 100-300 yd lanes.

.270 Win
Shoots flat with plenty of velocity and energy to knock deer flat at long range or short range. Very little recoil in my opinion. Ammo is plentiful and common. Accurate. X2 just because it works great for me in Texas on WT or Mulies. It puts the bullet where it needs to be everytime...I can't say the same for the shooter though sometimes.

7mm, my Dad gave me his Rem 700ADL when I was 13. He is my hero and I love him dearly for all the things he taught but mostly for the things he showed me about the outdoors, plus I have never lost an animal

Dad has hunted with one all his life and if its good enough for him then it is good enough for me. Never lost an animal. Had a couple gut-shots a few years back that I can now safely blame on a fubared scope. Just went to sight it in a couple weeks ago, shooting a 1" pattern at 100yards, no excuses :P

Well lets see, I shoot a .223 because the ammo is cheap and its fun to shoot. I also shoot a 7mm-08 with reloads of 140gr Sierra GameKing and it does the job on most everything I hunt. I got a 30-06 that I shoot because, well, why not? I got a 300 Win Mag because it will do everything the 30-06 does but flatter and a bit farther.
But as to what I shoot and why. That all depends on the game your talking about and what I feel like using that day.

Like many folks my age I started with a sporterized milsurp Springfield 03A3 in 30-06 in the late 1960's. Then acquired a 243 SAKO that allowed me to learn how to shoot accurately and spoiled me forever about refusing to own guns that would not shoot straight on every shot, that I could reload for super cheaply. Lost more deer in the 8-9 years I owned it with that 243 than I have with ALL the other guns I've owned combined. Also won more money shooting thumbtacks with that 243 than any thing I ever owned too... 5 shot Center to Center 1/4" 100 yard groups off the bench at the old Winchester Range in Dallas were not hard to come by if I did my part 40 years ago ... shot with Lee hand tool loaded ammo off my kitchen table without even using a powder scale.
Since then I've owned mebbe 40+ deer rifles and killed game with most of them. However a I've owned more and killed more game with a 270 of some sort than anything else. I learned that I could pair a 270 & 300Wmg and not have to learn any different holdover drop tables as they shoot the same bullet drops out to 500 yards, and everything else in the safe was just another toy.
Today, after downsizing severely 6 years ago going into a medically forced retirement I settled on 3 calibers beside a couple 22LR's that I'll never sell or trade....and then had to rethink the deal after a major shoulder reconstruction that I had not planned for that was supposed to leave me as a cripple...NOT YET was my answer to the PT folks, since I had beaten a bad upper back & neck protruding disc issue with extended therapy 20 years ago and knew I could do it again...mebbe. Today I currently own: 270 Tikka T3 SS/syn Lite w/ 3x9 @ 7lbs 4oz's total that seldom gets used except for spot & stalks for old time sakes or in rainy/muddy weather. 300WinMg Winchester M70 Classic SS/syn w/ 4x12 @ just under 10 lbs that is a bench or blind only queen. The factory weight forward Magnum barrel changes the point of balance dramatically and is a PIA to carry very far. 9.3x62 Mauser CZ 550 American w/ 3x9 BPlex as my "heavy" rifle @ 9lbs 8ozs total 'cause it's fun to shoot and scary accurate even in 250, 270 & 286 gr bullets that are way more comfortable to shoot than the 300 Mag is. The Burris BPlex reticle allows me holdover accuracy out to 3-400 yards and I get 3 rounds of 250's or 270's under an inch off the bench consistently. A buddy who hunts Africa a lot changed my mind from the 375H&H I was about to order to the old Mauser and he was dead solid right the 9.3 being tons more doable.
Then after the PT folks told me I was gonna be a cripple the rest of my life in Dec '06 and tried to prove it to me with an hour' sessionon their muscle stimulator that showed I had nothing left but mush for muscles and shoe leather for tendons... Stubborn Arsed me, I went and bought a replacement for all the soft kickers from 223 to 257Rbts I had ever owned before to start over with ...only in something real close to my fav 270 performance wise in a Tikka T3 Hunter Grade 6.5x55 Swede. In 6.5x55, it shoots the same bullet weight ranges of 100 gr'ers to 140 gr'ers at about 2-300 fps slower than a 270 does, has better ballistics even at the slower speeds and kicks less than a 243 does in it's max bullet weight of 100 gr'ers... even in the 6.5's much heavier 120 & 130 gr'ers. My T3 Swede Hunter in wood/blue wears a 3x9x40 and weighs 7lbs 9 ozs total slinged & loaded, and I can shoot 50+ rounds of max loaded 120's off the bench wearing nothing but a T Shirt when a box+ of 300's or 9.3's leave me wanting to quit early even while wearing a Past Shoulder Protector with Pachmayer Decelarator pads on the rifles, heck even the 270 Lite wears a Simms LimbSaver to make it tolerable...but the Swede is still wearing nothing but the hard arsed factory non slip pad. A Hunter's Happiness is getting blood on your boots again...was one of my Grand Father's favorite saying. Ron

257 Weatherby. I love 25's they are fast and flat with light recoil. I shot a 25-06 for years then found this Mark V that fit me perfect. If I hunt where a 25 caliber is illegal or not allowed then I shoot my trusty 300 RUM. My 10 yr old son and 12 yr old daughter shoot the 257 and have no problems and are deadly accurate.
