Here is this week's preview ya'll.
Should be a pretty educational show this week. Staying on top of current issues that could directly affect the Texas outdoorsman is something I take pride in so off the top we’ll visit with Matt Dunn- Legislative Director for the National Marine Manufacturers Association. Why visit with Matt??? Because Obama and the EPA are attempting to ramrod some ridiculous legislation down our throats. The proposed legislation was drafted by the EPA and would allow the sale of E15 gasoline. E15 is NOT compatible with any marine engine, lawnmower, weed whacker (or any other gas powered equipment) and even vehicles manufactured prior to 2007. Ethanol is bad for the engine and the consumers and all 13 million registered boat owners in the country could be left holding the bag on this deal.
Then, Dale Hall- CEO Ducks Unlimited drops in. Dale was recently named the Conservationist of the Year by America’s Wetland Foundation. We get into that, the lasting effects of the tragic Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill, Dale’s favorite place to hunt, and the most glaring obstacle he forsees facing the future of our continents waterfowl.
We then round things out with a guy who is probably a lot like you and me. Van Zandt County bowhunter Greg Goodrich joins the show to talk about an unfortunate decision he made while deer hunting last week. Greg killed an 8pt buck that failed to meet the Antler Restrictions in Grayson County. Greg didn’t realize this until he laid his hands on his buck. This was his largest archery deer ever harvested and while a trophy to him- the deer was still illegal. So he was faced with two choices: 1) walk away and let the deer lay in the woods OR 2) tag the deer and turn himself in… Lets just say that I am proud to have such an honest man and ethical hunter as a guest. Lots to learn from Greg’s experience!

Not trying to be a d-bag, but ethical would have been to make sure he was legal prior to shooting, if it was close, don't shoot. I think most would agree no matter which side of the AR debate you are on. If he did turn himself in, at least he was honest, and that is very respectable thing to do.

I think he is saying he had two choices once he knew it was too small, with the rack in his hands.
At that point you can not undo the shot.
It is obvious that he should have thought about it a little longer, and held off if not sure, but once he nhad the deer, on the ground, not many people would do what he did. And he did the right thing. Glad I do not hunt in an AR county.

OK, I'll go first. Take the damn deer home and learn from your mistake. Just a wee bit bigger next time.

Choice 3 would be not to shoot if not sure... Have to agree. I've hunted in an AR county for years and have let so many walk I lost count. If in doubt, let it walk!
Thursday at 12:45 PM #33 Once i learned that i didn't "NEED" to kill something, and that if i did kill something all the fun stopped and work began, i was a much better hunter.

I have to admit, if I shot a not legal deer then I would quarter it up as soon as possible. I don't plan on making the mistake though, if I shoot a buck this year it is going to be very obvious it's way over 13" wide

I understand what ya'll are saying. Obviously the best advice would be to have never let the arrow fly. But in talking with Craig, this was a Hagerman deer that he never saw at any angle other than broadside. In his mind there was never a doubt that this was not only the biggest buck he had ever shot (bow or rifle) but it was also a big bodied deer with good lenght, He will be the first to admit that he screwed the pooch. But he is also a bowhunter ed and hunter ed instructor and his feeling was "how could he ever stand in front of a class and teach hunting ethics if he didn't have any himself?" I dunno, I respect the guy for what he did after he made the mistake. This is the deer in question which measured just over 12 inches wide:

Folks saying he shouldn't have shot it if he wasn't sure it was legal? Maybe in his mind, he was sure and just made an honest mistake. Can't wait to hear how it all turned out and think it's cool he's telling the story on your show Cable! It might have been unethical for him to have shot it in some folk's minds but if he did turn himself in, how the hell can that not be considered ethical in his decision to turn himself in???? Can't wait to hear his story.

Oh I don't think what he did was unethical, quite the contrary. He's a better man than me for taking the blame and reporting it, I'm afraid I wouldn't have told

Cable, you mentioned the buck was a Hagerman buck. Don't deer hunters who hunt there have to check their deer kills in at a Hagerman check station anyway?

Yes they do, but he had already measured the deer and called in advance to let them know he had to check in an illegal deer. Game warden was there waiting for him and did write him a citation and took the deer.

Too bad they couldn't give him a little credit for being somewhat honest....I know rules are rules but how many drivers out there have gotten by with nothing more than a warning while breaking a traffic law? I got pulled over in Quitman last Friday on the way to my deer lease, the day before opening of rifle season. I was speeding through a school zone but the lady cop saw my wheelers on the trailer, all my hunting stuff in the bed of my truck and let me go with nothing more than a warning. Speeding through a school zone, to me, is worse and more dangerous than shooting a buck who's stupid antlers don't measure up and yet all I got was a slap on the hand. Justice is nothing but a word to use sometimes.

Cable,
Did the Game Warden have the authority to only give him a warning? It seems to me a warning would be all that needed to happen here. A few years ago I received a written warning for signing the newly changed deer tags in the wrong place.I thanked him for not citing me and thought highly of his kindness.
