Have been shooting a few of them but I have no idea what makes a good mount, they are always colorful I have no clue what makes a difference. Input?

No pin feathers. I also believe the longer the feathers coming off the top of the head the better the bird. Though someone with more knowledge may correct me.

I've shot plenty of woodies but finally got one mounted last year. He had really nice comb and I got it standing looking a little to the side with the neck kinda hunched down a little.

I have shot lots of woodies and finally got one mounted. It was not the best looking drale I have ever taken but it is my only banded Woodduck. I have him and a hen mounted sitting on drift wood. Will post a pic next week when I get a chance

The comb is where its at for me- being the most dramatic feature, the longer the better. If you're shooting a few you'll be able to easily sort out any juveniles, birds that aren't yet in full winter plume, etc. I'll take this opportunity to shamelessly post our birds from last Friday. I intend to put a wood duck on the wall this season, and one of these had no visible feather damage, and was obviously larger than the rest so he went in the freezer. They are thick all season at one of my spots so I'll hang onto the best one I have until/unless I improve on him as the season goes. I hope to do the same with a redhead this year. Of course I'd have to see one first. Just don't try explaining that "I'll hold onto this one unless something better happens by" strategy to the wife...I was talking about ducks and still got a dirty look! Maybe it was the mention of hoping to bag a redhead. I guess it didn't sound as good in my out loud voice...

Any of the 6 on the left. 2 most mount-worthy of the day.
