I have always referred to too much gun as being more rifle than the shooter is able to shoot in a comfortable an accurate manner without flinching, pulling shots, or routinely missing the point of aim

Then why would you shoot one in the shoulder? Well if you READ what I wrote you would see I was talking about others shooting small deer in the shoulder with larger caliber rifles and destroying what meat is there...

When I hear or say "too much gun" I mean that it is overkill for the game. Like hunting Texas whitetails with a .300RUM. Sure it will get the job done but it is totally unnecessary But if you already have one, you might as well use it. Have one and use it on whitetails, haven't messed up any more meat than when i use a 22-250 on them. I go for heart shots on bucks, and head shots on does or spikes. Main reason for getting the 300 rum was for elk hunting, but it seems like a shame to not use it on anything else just because people say it is too much gun

Ive seen MUCHO meat wasted because someone was using a large caliber on those hill country deer and blew both shoulders out. Don't shoot them in the meat! I like the meat too much. Then why would you shoot one in the shoulder? x2 pop'em in the neck or head

I think the term " To Much Gun" is mostly is used a lot as simply an opinion that is not always justified. I occasionally shoot a 1895 GG in 45-70 and have been told that it's to much gun for Texas deer. With that being said, the focus of the comment for most seems to refer to the size of the animal being shot not how the caliber effects the shooter. To me, "To Much Gun" would be considered to much gun for the hunter to shoot properly.

TexasVine, lots of folks prefer slow-moving, large caliber bullets for whitetail, and I sure wouldn't consider your Guide Gun to be "too much gun" (matter of fact, it's the next gun on my "gotta have it" list). If you were going after those whitetail using Garrett's Hammerhead ammo, however, I think that would be a very different situation. You'd be getting through and through hits every time, and unless you hit brain, large bone, or heart, you'd likely be spending a lot of time tracking. IMO, at that point, your GG would fit the definition of too much gun.

I usually use the Hornady LeverEvolution load. This load allows me to be accurate out to 100 yards with a scout scope.

Well going back to the classical John Wayne interpretation, I think he meant too much gun for the size of the intended game. I cant remember the animal from the movie but you don't hunt rabbits with a deer rifle.

I'm almost 68 years old. A 300 win mag rifle and 10 ga shotgun are now too much gun for me.

I must be the weirdest hunter in the world. I can hit a deer running with a 7MM but can't shoot a target to save my life. My dad has always said I couldn't hold my ears and shoot at the same time. But always explained to all his friends when I started slaying deer at 13 with his 7MM. He doesn't hear anything when he's excited, just don't ask him to shoot a target. I have all my guns zeroed in for me. In 30 years I have only had to re-sight one when my wife broke my scope by steeping on it. I will not ever probaly have to have it sighted in again. So, when I hunt,I would never be allowed to hunt at a ranch where they required to hit a target, I couldn't hit it with a 22. But the last deer I missed was when I was 13 also!!! 37 years old. I guess all those years of squirrel hunting and rabbit hunting paid off....LOL

if your hungry a deer rifle will de-head the rabbit without messing up the body, just shoot his nose, force alone kills it.
