OK guys, I have read a lot of things on here. I still have 8 months till I am back in the states and able to hunt. I am really wanting to try hog hunting. I have wanted to do it since I was a kid. Anyway, from what I have seen on here. I am guessing that they move more at night when the weather is warmer, and when it is cooler, or overcast, rainy, they move during the day also. When I do get to go, I got a couple ranches already lined up, but don't want to pay every time I go. So I am going to hit up some public land. During day light only. So I am guessing that the ranches will already be set up with feeders, and stands. and the public land I will have to stalk. Using rifle on ranches, and bow on public. What else can you tell me about hunting these nasty things. Just trying to do my homework before I get home and hit the trail. Thanks.

Hogs are interesting creatures. I've been hitting them hard core for the past 10 months (out to the property at least 1 a week, more or less). If there is a pattern, I have yet to figure it out.
To answer your question they do like the cover of darkness, yet I've killed them in day light also. As per weather, I honestly don't think it affects/effects their system too much in N. Texas. I would hit water holes in the summer, just before dark.
When you say "Ranches" it sounds like you are talking about pay as you go ranches. I've had experience in 2 of these 1 threw out corn the other didn't still saw hogs at both.
Public land, had experience deer hunting as a kid but never saw a hog.
The one thing that I know works is CORN. Pour it and they will come.
Good luck and keep posted.

on public you can also use shotguns with buck shot. a little safer than a bow if your trying to stalk them

I'm a newbie as well. I've been out hog hunting twice with no luck. Both times I've tried to stalk them but I think they can hear/smell me well before I see them. I'm starting to think that sitting and watching a pile of corn will be my best bet.

If you are going to hunt public land you will need a pull cart. My 62 year old dad found that out this weekend when he had to drag his deer 400 yards that he shot on WMA.
