I was looking at some guns at a local auction that will take place tomorrow.
I saw a Remington model 7400 .270 win. I do not have any knowledge about rifles, I only hunt ducks and geese but I am trying to kill a Mule deer on some family land this year.
What is a gun like this worth? No scope included, just the gun. In great condition. Wood stock.
I also saw a nice smith and wesson .357 revolver, what would that be worth if anyone were to guess?
Any prices would be great because I would like to go in with a price in my head before I buy anything

This is just my opinion but I wouldn't take that rifle if it were given to me. Stay away from the autoloaders because they are very finicky. I had one and it wouldn't group up to save your life. Stick with a bolt gun and you will be much happier. I had all kind of problems with it, the triggers are horrible and they have to be spotlessly clean or they will not cycle well and I even used to have problems with the extractor ripping the rim right off of the bullet and the old case getting stuck in the barrel because the chamber was not very smooth.
Again just my .02 but I would buy a bolt gun and never look back.

I don't know what model on the S&W. Has a 10 inch barrel. Nice looking gun.
Like I said, don't know a thing about rifles or handguns just shotguns.
Thanks for the advice. If I can grab either one for a couple hundred I think I will but anything over $300 I will let pass

If the 7400 is clean and straight it's worth 350-375... hard to judge anything without seeing it.
A 10 inch barrel Smith adn Wesson 357 would be extremely rare, could be 8 and 3/8ths

i don't care for the 740 or the 7400. dinner plate groups just don't appeal to me
go get a model 700, happy hunting!

Yeah, never said you were going to win the olympics with it...
The 740 is not good, the 742 was better; 7400 was different but still about the same; they are being replaced by the 750, which is shooting 1 to 1.5 inch groups from carbine length guns, and are WAY more reliable...
But for deer hunting, the 7400's have killed a lot of deer...

I have killed many deer with my 7400 some at over 300 yards. Never had any malfunctions with it, and it groups fine for hunting purposes. Mine is going on about 25 years I have had it, and it has never malfunctioned. Just stopped using it as my regular gun a couple years ago. Still use it for hog hunting, but don't have a scope on it anymore.
Also willing to be it will shoot less than 2" groups.

I'll never own another auto loading rifle from Remington again.
I owned a Remmy 7400, jammed like crazy. Just like someone else said, the spent case would jam and the extractor would chip the tip of the case off.
Also ownned a 742 Woodsmaster in 30-06, Worked great for a while, then got to where it would jam pretty regular. It was the prettiest peice of junk I ever owned.
IMO, if you want a carbine length Remington rifle, get a 760 Gamemaster. Otherwise keep to the bolt actions.

I have several hundred rounds through a 750 Carbine and a 742 Carbine, both 308, both are flawless in reliability. The 750 is much more accurate.
As for killing deer at common ranges, they are proven killers. My father in law killed 2-3 a year with one forever, Redneck_Mesiah here hunts with one constantly, as do several others I know of... definitely not long range target rifles, but proven effective deer killers...

Never been to or know anyone that has hunted a maple forest..... but tons of them in Texas and Colorado.... Not doubting you had a bad one, just saying we've used them effectively all my life... Biggest concern with any of the 740s 742s is the extractor ring breaking, but thats an easy fix...

There's been a lot of bad press on the Remington bolt action rifles firing without touching the trigger. Guys on this forum have had problems with them and many have not.

You know I have heard of such problems with the 740-7400 series autos, but there are several of them being used by variuos family members and they all function. Granted I have never seen any of thos guys pull less than a 2" group at the range they manage to kill deer an pigs left and right despite that.
