As some of you know this is the 1st time I am going out hunting, this is what I know:
1. My 30-30 is on for about 75 to 100 yards it was fixed and I tried it out still good,
2.my blind is about 55 yards from where the corn is,
3.due to I don't care about horns the best shot would be a head shot? (I think)
4. I can put out corn the night before (no feeder)
What else do I need to know like: shooting light, sent cover up, calls, or anything else you think I may need to know to stay safe and legal
Thanks for any help

Forget the head shot. To much margin of error. Go for a lung shot. Not enough meat on the ribs to worry about losing. Personally I do not use cover scent. I try to co completely scentless. Take into account the wind and always try to stay down wind. Make sure you have your hunting license and drivers license with you and make sure your hunting license is signed.

Scope or open sites? Binos? I would shoot a heart or lung shot and that way you only ruin a couple of ribs on either side if deer is broadside. Where is the corn at in relation to the blind for wind direction? Ground blind or elevated? Sounds like you are getting excited.

Personally i think 55 yards is to close.80-100 yards and they dont smell you as easy and your 30-30 is able to make the lung and heart shot.Be careful of sudden movement and fill your tag and place on deer as soon as you shoot it.I like baggies to put tag in and zip ties to secure it to the ear or antler.Good luck and take a camera. We like pictures.

Just go for a lung shot or maybe a neck shot. Not the head

Just tuck that bullet in right behind the shoulder and about midway up the body and he'll be dead right there. He might even run a bit, he just won't know he's dead yet. And if he does run, you'll have plenty of blood to track him.
Get some years, and a lot of practice, under your belt before going for head and neck shots. Practice not just shooting paper, but also shooting animals in the body. Remember where you aimed when you shoot an animal. I mean remember the hair you aimed at. Then be truthful with yourself when you see where the bullet actually hit. You might just find it an eye opening lesson. Those type of shots are highly controversial for a reason. Some can pull them off with ease, so they say. But it takes a very controlled set of circumstances to consistently hit a kill zone that small in field conditions. While I have shot many deer in the neck, I do not consider myself any better shot for doing it. It's not glamor I seek when doing it, it's a drop where you stand shot, and then only if conditions align themselves for the opportunity. Enough preaching, have fun, respect your prey, and above all be safe.
Tolerance is the virtue of a man without conviction.

Do a little research on the kill zone of a white-tailed deer! Head shot's are kind of unethical in the thought that if your a hair or two off then that deer is going to go a long way if it even dies! A good clean shot behind the shoulder is hand's down the way to go for a good ethical harvest! That head shot is a tuffy man but good luck to ya' and get em'!

Scope or open sites? Binos? Sorry my 30-30 is open sites and no Binos.
Where is the corn at in relation to the blind for wind direction? Ground blind or elevated? it is a Ground Blind and it is about south west of where the corn is trees along the north, west and east of it only about 75 yards at the most and 10 yards at the closest. For the most part the wind is from my back
for the shot I will "Just tuck that bullet in right behind the shoulder and about midway up the body"
What time can I shoot I know daylight but is there a time?

try to have the wind in ur face or any direction other than blowing right where the corn and deer are feeding.

I agree forget the head shot. Especially with a 30-30. Next I usally just break some cedar on way to stand and take with while rubbing on clothing> Works great.

from one-half hour before sunrise to one-half hour after sunset. For information on sunrise/sunset hours, please look at: http://www.sunrisesunset.com/usa/Texas.asp. I usually wait 30 minutes or so if I know I had a clean shot even if the animal is down on the spot (never fun to have one jump up and scare the crap out of you). At 55 yards, you'll know if you hit em good without question. I wouldn't smoke. If you can't hold out, grab some SNUS to hold you over while your in the blind. That being said, I've seen my grand-dad drop a deer while I was holding his lit cigar for him.

Head shots are out! Ive done it far tooooo many times and just knocked the deer out! Nothing worse than seeing a deer with half a head running off and panicking to shoot it again. GO FOR LUNG!

Head shots are unethical because even if you've dropped 99% of your deer that way the other 1% is'nt even close to worth it! As hunters we need to be as ethical and moral as possible. We owe it to the animals that we harvest. Remember we are stewards of the land and the animals on it.

Alot of people will tell you not to smoke. My father has smoked in his stands (and bow stands) probably since he started hunting. He has killed some great deer and managed a 189" Kansas Monster last year with his bow...I am sure he had just dropped his cig before he shot it. Keep the wind in your favor and you don't have to worry about scent.
I don't agree with head shots either. Seen one too many deer that ended up with their jaw hanging from a shot that was only a couple of inches off. It is a terrible thing to see.
The time before going after the deer would depend on where you hit the deer. As a general rule, I always allow 30 minutes. If you think that you hit him back towards the guts it could take a lot longer. If it is cool, I would leave him overnight and look in the morning or if you shoot him in the morning, give him 6-8 hours.

If you are going to smoke, I would definitely make sure the wind is in your face and you're facing your pile of corn. Forget the headshot as mentioned above. Just asking for trouble, frustration, heartache, etc. Good shot behing the shoulder will put 'em down. Have a good time and be safe

I would go pick up some Skunk Scent before you go out to the stand and put some latex gloves on when handling it! Put a drop on each toe and heel of your hunting boots or shoes and drip some on the outside of your stand!!! Doesn't matter if you smoke then, lol! Would be best to have the wind at your face though! I have almost always placed my shots at the base of the neck/top of the shoulder or right behind the front shoulder! If they get up I put another shot into the shoulder! Good Luck man!!!

I would move your blind back to around the 100 yard mark if possible. A wise hunter told me once that no scent is the best scent. I've found that to be true more times than not. You should get a feeder cause if you put your corn out the night before 1 or things 2 could happen.. 1 the cows will get it.. or 2 the pigs will get it. Try for a broad side shot not a head shot unless you've practiced practiced.. did I say practice..lol Good luck to you!

OOhh yea can I smoke out there or not? You might want to get yourself a parks and wildlife manual and read it on the crapper the night before, no offence but you are asking basic questions that can be answered by reading the hunting section of this book. To all hunters, dont just fill out your tag.... Dont forget your log either... everybody be safe this weekend and good luck to all.!
