Whenever I think the rut is close or on if a doe walks in I typically won't even think of shooting her hoping that a buck may be trailing her. I always remain hopeful even 30mins after 1st seeing the doe. In yalls experince what is the furthest you seen a buck trailing behind a doe? In all my years of hunting unless the buck was right on her I've never seen a buck come in behind the doe. I'm asking cause if I get a doe that lingers around my stand this morning I'm going to be tempted (last weekend of bow season) but its been a long while since I've killed a nice buck and I've been seeing some chasing lately.

The longest I have had to wait to see a buck that is actually chasing a doe is about 2 or 3 minutes. That does not mean that if a buck happens to pass through the area he will not come over and check the doe out that has been at your area for an hour.

Waited about 15min last year. Does showed up. Left. Then 15min later he was nose to the ground running after them. The oldest doe kept looking back and wasn't eating.

Hunting on opening morning years ago in East TX I had two does with a small buck run across a power line row in front of my stand. A good forty five minutes later a big mature 8 point came running out of the woods on their trail and stopped in the road. It was the last thing that buck ever did. Really glad I passed on the smaller buck with the does. One or both of those does was in heat no doubt.

I'm asking cause if I get a doe that lingers around my stand this morning I'm going to be tempted (last weekend of bow season) but its been a long while since I've killed a nice buck and I've been seeing some chasing lately. Kinda depends. The way I see it, if the doe is hangin around and not constantly looking over her shoulder, no buck. If she passes thru fairly quickly, could be mr big trailing her. If she is just walking thru and has a buck with her, he probably won't be 30 or 40 yds behind. Should be able to see him when you see her. Now, if she is just hangin around or just feeding thru your set up, you have a choice. Take the shot or leave her for a live decoy. I did this 2 yrs ago. Left her for a live decoy. It was the last weekend of bow season. Just as she got out of my bow range, she bolted and ran. Her fawn just stood there looking. I knew then a buck was near. Sure enough, I heard him grunt. I grunted him in at 20 yds. He was a massive 10 pt that came in to scent check her. Before he got in my shooting lane, he decided to go give that doe another smell, and she took him off over the next ridge. Soooooooooo, if I had shot her, I might have never seen that brute.
