All the deer on my lease are nocturnal. I talked to one of our local guides and here is what he suggested. Put out a bale of alfalfa and a mix of pellet, soy bean, and corn in the feeder. I'll let you all know how it works. I know that I have alot of acorns down and it is messing with the deer. Nothing on the camera in 2 weeks. But this problem has been going on for the last 4 months. Had to try something.
I'm heading out for a morning hunt, hope to see something.

The mix looks good. I think it was $11.00 per bag.

I don't see how that is going to change the noctural, sorry. Hope you don't have cows, they will destroy a pen to get to alalfa. Noctural comes from small places and pressure.

dgilbert, The lease only has 3 hunters and is 500 acres. So the pressure issue is not the problem. We will see what the camera shows on Wed.

I'm one hunter on 600 acres and deal with the same issues, but it's a result of too many hunters on surrounding properties. I still see deer during the day, just not the mature bucks. Usually have to wait until late season, once it's real cold and there's not much for them to eat to see much activity from mature bucks at my place.

If there is never much traffic on the lease until right now at this time of the year, now all of sudden new vehicles and traffic at all hours of the day. The deer can sense the change with new traffic, noise and smell. They will change their movement patterns if there is plenty of natural forage for them to turn to. The shape of the lease will also make it more susceptable to neighboring lease pressure also as stated here if the lease is long and narrow. Density of bedding and escape cover or lack of it can make them change movement patterns easier with new traffic on the lease.
Are idiots multiplying faster than normal people?

stxranch, I have been out on the lease 2 times a week since July. This has been an on going problem. The lease has 3 tank batteries on it so there is traffic on it. The natural forage is high but it has been that way all year. The deer were hitting the feeders and once the acorns dropped, well you know. The lease is very long and wide, it has open space, hills, 5 tanks, and oak trees. Lots of good cover also in areas. The one thing I don't know is the amount of neighboring lease pressure. I know of one lease across 2190 is in use, but the one behind us I'm not sure about. Thanks for the info. Jim

my brother hunts 1700 acres and cars drive all the time on it because of oil and gas but they still don't see anything real mature till rut they don't even get pictures on camera hardly of real mature bucks then rut hits and 150's-180's pop out imo big bucks just move at night till they have to come eat during the day
can't wait to hear a report on that stuff jim Seth

Well I just got back from the lease. The verdict is in on the new plan. WASTE OF MONEY. Have cow's, cow's, and more cow's on the camera. Only one deer and that was at night. I will be pulling the alfalfa out of the feeder area on Sunday. Don't want to mess with it now.

One more thing, I will be making my feeder pen bigger next week. I used 3 big hog panels cut in half, I'm going to 4.
