Saw some pretty large flocks of pelicans here this morning. There were some ducks around them as well.

Most of them don't stay in this area year round. I believe these to be northern birds that have moved in on the front.

The Pelicans are here! The Pelicans are here!

Everyone leave work immediately and grab your gear!

Pelicans in October?!? This is gonna be the best duck season ever!!!

I went by Academy at lunch, and dad gummit if they weren't completely sold out of pelican decoys.

On a sidenote, I saw a hog running yesterday which means this is going to be a banner deer season.

Thanks for the heads up, squatch. up

The seasoned waterfowler that you are I thought you would of already had plenty of pelican decoys. You shouldn't wait till the last minute. Was that hog running north or south? Makes a difference, but being the great deer hunter you are you already know that. Any other great information to share? What kind of quail season do you expect? What indicators do you point at? I can tell you the forecast for squirrel season looks outstanding. For indicators I check the Migratory section.

I saw a field rat which means it should be a great squirrel season. After all, they both have 4 legs. Coincidence, I think not.

I am a great deer hunter. Here's my secret: I drink beer in the stand and constantly pee out of the back window. Then when the deer walks under the feeder, I put the crosshairs on him and pull the trigger.

Just pullin' your chain, squatch. Pelican migration would not be a good indicator of waterfowl number in my opinion.

I don't have any idea if the pelican migration has anything to do with other waterfowl migration. It does seem to follow the same process and for the same reasons. If we had enough information we could eventually make some determinations. This morning I saw the first ones I had seen this year.

As far as urinating out of the stand, I find that drinking the darker wheat laden beer helps as an attractant.

This makes sense, the ones I saw this morning were on the coast of a DFW Metroplex lake. Maybe that is the indicator that the other waterfowl has already migrated south and the pelicans don't like the new neighbors and fly north. That is the ticket.

Your pelican info for the day:

If you see a bunch up on shore, standing on rocks, etc, get out the bino's and check them for bands. Quite a few of them are banded. Makes for good photo ops. Most of the bands I have spotted have been on the older adults. Look for the knob or bump on the top front of the bill to find the older pelicans.

They can't bite worth a damn. They only have enough muscle strentgh to close their bill like a lid. No force necessary.
