Anyone out here have an opinion on the 270 WSM caliber. I've been wanting a new gun, and am thinking about this caliber.

My buddy hase one and he really likes it. He says its a flat shooter and not alot of recoil. He has shot a couple of bucks with it at 200 yds or more and they fell dead. Ammo is expensive.

The 270 WSN is just a little faster and flatter than the 270 Win that has been taing game cleanly for 85 years, There is really not that much difference between the 270 WSM and the 270Win on game. Both are flat shooting and enough gun for anything up to and including Elk IMO. If you like short actions go with the WSM. I think the 270 and 300 will be the longest lasting of the WSM cartridge family.
As far as recoil, well that might depend on the gun. I have a Tika T3 in 270WSM and it was one of the most painful rifles I have ever shot, until I put a good recoil pad on it. Factory loads have proven to be sub MOA in that rifle shooting out to 400 yards, I haven't trtied it beyond that yet.
Guns of this type are carried more than shot, generally speaking. I like the rifle and cartidge.

I do not agree at all with the above post. There is a big difference between a regular .270 and a .270 short. The WSM is much faster and powerful. Shoots incredibly flat. I too have a Tikka T3 Lite and the recoil is more than a lesser caliber gun, but it is not anything I think twice about when shooting. I will shoot 2-3 boxes at the range in one sitting and my shoulder does fine. I am 6'0" 195, so not huge by any means. Go with it, you will love it.

Love the 2 that I have ammo is not an issue. The price is the same for winchester supremes as I pay for the federal premuim for my other guns so the cost factor is mute
I have some magic beans if anyone is interested. No extra time hunting but they'll make you fart to the tune of Back In Black...

the 270 wsm is closer to the 270 wby then the regualr ol-270 but just in a shorter action.
270 wsm to me is probley the one round of the WSMs that will always be there. I bought my best friend one for is birthday several years ago when they first came out... They can thump you real good with out a good recoil pad

its about like shooting a 7mag. LMAO...His wife and I split the cost... I introduced him to hunting and our families are very close and have been for close to 15 years, let just say he loved hunting so much he bought a ranch.... guess you can say that small investment has had huge dividends

Yeah, I don't know about this caliber now that Hornady has introuduced their Superformance Ammunition. That and Remington's Managed Recoil loads give the old .270 WCF an amazing amount of flexibility.
.270 WCF 130 gr. Superformance = 3200 fps
.270 WSM 130 gr. = 3050 fps

I just got one a few weeks back in a savage model 12 and shot it at the range a few times. It has some recoil but it's comparable to my .308, not bad at all IMO. From the few times I shot it I really liked it but may be selling it soon if I sell my motorycle.

My father and I have a fair amount of experience with the .270 WSM cartridge. Between the two of us, we have taken 4 elk, 3 mule deer, 1 antelope, 2 coyotes, and 1 red fox with the .270 WSM. We have tried several bullet styles and weights in the cartridge, but feel that the 140 grain Nosler Accubond provided the best blend of killing power, accuracy, and flat trajectory. With that said, the plain old .270 Winchester is still one of my all time favorites.

Not a fan of any of the WSM's. The ammo is high priced and other calibers can do what they can do. Never really understood what the point of them was. Only plus side I can see is that you can get the 7mm, 270, and 300 wsm's in short action rifles.
I think the hype with them is that people just like trying something new, and I can understand that. The old .270 win and 30-06 are pretty boring to talk about. It won't be long before outdoor writers in the media are claiming that the 300 WSM is the only caliber suited for mulies, elk, or moose. Never mind that the 30-06 or 270, or even the 300 win mags have been doing darn near the same things for years and years.
With all this being said, yes, I have owned two rifles chambered in the WSM's. One being a Savage model 11 in 270 WSM and the other being a 7mm WSM in a winchester model 70. I took one deer with the 270 WSM and seven hogs with the 7mm WSM. They all died.
Just like they would have from a regular 270 or a 7mm remington mag. I've since sold the rifles because I just don't see the need in paying the high prices for the ammunition. Would I buy another? It depends on what type of rifle it was I suppose. But I just can't see myself buying another rifle in the WSM calibers just because I feel the need to have that extra power.

Yeah, ok...Wow, some people read way to many advertisements in hunting mags. The truth is with both shooting 130 bullets the REAL world difference is about 2" at 400 yds...WOW, AMAZING, well not really..... And I don't give a flying flip what Winchester says in their ballistic tables. Go shoot both at 400 yds and get back to me. Whats funny is Nosler (you know, the company that makes the bullet Winchester is loading) doesn't list such a big difference between the same bullet going at 3100 fps and 3300 fps, interesting...... Don't get me wrong, the 270 WSM is a fine cartridge, but the ad hype beteween it and the old 270 Win is pretty much ad hype. Yes its faster and flatter. But its no friggin' laser beam like Winchester and Field and Stream readers would like us to think. Not trying to knock the 270 WSM but don't sit here and try to tell me its some wonder cartridge that is MUCH faster and MUCH more powerful. Been there done that. People need to spend more time shooting their rifles and shooting stuff with them and less time on the computer, they might learn something.......

I reload 270 Win and 270 WSM. Factory ammo is 3000-3200 for 130gr in 270 Win. WSM is about 3200-3300 fps. 270 WSM Corbon is rated 3300, some 270 WSM Win I bought was 3275.
I made my reloads with R22 for 270 win and they come out about 3100fps. My 130gr loads for 270 WSM with IMR 4350 match the 3275fps of the factory load to use a custom turret on the scope.
Weatherby factory ammo is pretty close to top end WSM. But it can handle a lot more powder and some load data is 100+fps faster than 270 WSM load data.
In general, I'd rather have the short action of the WSM than a long action for the quicker cycling.
.277 140gr and 150gr bullets have pretty good Ballistic coefficient, but the 7mm and heavier 308 bullets are much higher.
