Helped, or tried to help, a buddy the other night find a doe and the things I called "lights" were far from helpful. Any insight, no pun intended, into a good light at a reasonable price?

Okay, not sure what a reasonable price is to you, but I have several 150 to 200 dollar lights from surefire and stream light, that work great(100 to 200 Lumens). However, I bought one of these from a guy at the gun show a few weeks back, and fir the size it is insanely bright, and versatile and much cheaper. It has multiple settings, is and LED, and is anodized aluminum. I use my pretty often on the red or green LED's for in the blind work, but when you throw on the full white, it is blinding.

For occasional use, in my packs, we use Streamlight Scorpion's, about $30 bucks, very bright and compact and durable...

I have used Streamlights for years and have no complaints. Not sure what size your are looking at, but check out the link.

Remember, you pay for what you get. These things do last for years, I have had a SL-20 since the 70's and it is still working for me.

The Coast Lenser V2 Power Chip puts out 110 lumens in a tight spot for about $45 shipped and uses 3 AAA batteries. It gives you over 30 hours of use as opposed to 20 minutes to two hours from the much higher priced "tactical" flashlight. I own both the V2 Power Chip and the T7 Tactical (200 Lumens & 4 AAA's-$75 shipped). Both are available at Amazon.com.

I also have a bracket to mount it on my scope for night hunting.

I have found that a three or four cell mag light with an LED bulb replacement works great. It doesn't end up being very expensive at all. It's just as bright/brighter than my $80 Surefire.

Couldn't agree more. A lumen is a lumen no matter what the price of the flashlight that produces it. Take the price of the light and divide it by the number of lumens it creates to determine the best deal.

I would no more consider buying an expensive flashlight, than I would a Rolex watch. A $15 watch from Wal-Mart is just as good (actually better) at telling you the correct time. Unless the light is for true, professional use (such as military or law enforcement), everything else is just a matter of show and prestige.

I myself use a Mini-Mag pocket light with an LED bulb. It's plenty bright for what I need. Besides, if you practice plenty and only take clear and honest shots, you shouldn't need a lot of light (and help) to find your deer.

I would also suggest only buying a light that operates with standard (D,C,AA,AAA) batteries that you can find practically anywhere.

Sam Walton, who was at one time, the wealthiest man in America, was known for driving the same old pickup for many years. In fact, it was so old and beaten that his dog (which he liked to carry with him) eventually chewed all the plastic off the steering wheel. Still, Sam kept driving that old pickup (with the chewed up steering wheel) because it continued to satisfy his needs. Needless to say, he was a man who was very good at knowning when to spend a lot, and when to spend a lot less.

The type of lens and reflector system used is as or more important than the # of lumens. The new Maglites with the LED conversions are definitely an improvement.

Olight m30. Looks like daylight with 600+ lumens. Takes cr123 or 18650 batteries. They're a little high but you won't have to replace them. high medium low and strobe modes. Weapon mountable and can double as a spot light. You can buy red, green or blue filters for $10. Comes with a clear light diffuser.

X2 I have the LED LENSER T7 and a X21 is 4-D cell. They are the brightest flashlights I have owned. The X21 is like a handheld spotlight! It will shine out to 200+ yds easy. I use it to blood trail with and it lights up the ground. Battery life is great on them for how well they work.

Another one to look at would be the Bushnell HD. Very bright and no cast off light. Focused beam.

I use to build and sell these lights. No hands burned for 20 hrs on high and 150 hours on low. Those flash lights are nice but they don't compare. Its what I use to coon hunt with. I have won to state championships with them. I don't make them any more but there is a man on here named DAWELLS that still does.

I use one of the free LED lights from Harbor Freight, nice and compact pocket sized. The price is right, and in the last 3 months I got about 7 of them.

I have this Pelican. It came with a charger, AC and DC adapters, and a holster. It very bright and has a good beam. It's a little larger than some, but not too big that it is a problem. I pais about $130 for it. Good customer service also.

Go to academy and get a brinkman armormax, come in 60 or 140 lumens I think. Both run on aa batts. 60 is 15 bucks, 140 is like 25. Or buy a streamlight.
