I know they arent waterfowl but has anyone heard anything regarding Texas passing a reg. about crow hunting....? I was told by a guy at Gander Mountian that you cant shoot crows in Texas anymore..Sounds a bit far-fetched to me but thought Id check...

Ok Finally got thru to TPWD and she said you can shoot crows ONLY if they are damaging your property, ie: trees, crops, wildlife but you cant just sit out and hunt them by calling or any other means....That suks!!

ENDANGERED, THREATENED, AND OTHER PROTECTED NONGAME SPECIES It is unlawful for any person to hunt (see Definitions - Hunt) threatened, endangered, or protected nongame species. To sell or purchase goods made from threatened or endangered species, proper documentation must accompany the goods. For a complete list of threatened and endangered species, and regulations relating to breeding threatened and endangered species, please call (800) 792-1112 (menu 5).
Protected Birds: Hawks, owls, eagles, and all other nongame birds and songbirds (except for the few unprotected birds listed below) are protected by various state and federal laws and may not be killed, taken from the nest, picked up, or possessed for any reason, and their feathers may not be possessed or sold. Arts and crafts may not include these protected species under any circumstances.
Unprotected Birds: The only birds not protected by any state or federal law are European starlings, English sparrows, feral rock doves (common pigeon - Columba livia) and Eurasian collared-doves; these species may be killed at any time, their nests or eggs destroyed, and their feathers may be possessed.
Yellow-headed, red-winged, rusty, or Brewer's blackbirds and all grackles, cowbirds (does not include cattle egret), crows, or magpies may be controlled without a federal or state depredation permit when found committing or about to commit depredations on ornamental or shade trees, agricultural crops, livestock, or wildlife, or when concentrated in numbers and in a manner that constitutes a health hazard or other nuisance.
Bats: May not be hunted, killed, possessed, purchased or sold; however, bats may be moved, trapped, or killed if inside or on a building occupied by people. A person may transport a bat for the purpose of laboratory testing if there is a rabies concern.

So basically that says what she told me--they have to be comitting or about to commit depredations on your property or concentrated in numbers that constitutes a health hazard.....So I guess when I was calling them in earlier this morning with my crow call and had approx. 30 flying around and landing in my trees that would constitute a "Concentration in Numbers?"

Nope still won't hold up in court, you have to have probable cause that the bird intended on committing a crime

Well this sounds pretty wide open to me. Other nuisance can mean about anything and I thought they were about to commit depredations on my ornamental tree. A concentrated number must be 2

This true but the regulation ask you to presume or assume when it says about to commit.
Just my take on it

I dealt with this in commercial accounts I took care of. Getting a permit to control protected birds (Grackles most often) is more trouble than the birds. Most facilities would only proceed if the USDA was breathing down their necks. I used to pull in over 100.00 and hour for tagging pigeons in a sheet glass foundry.
Glad they added Eurasians to the list.

One of the things I miss the most about where I used to live, was shooting 15-20 flats of shells every couple of days at grackels, n RWs on my buddy's farm over their sorghum and corn.

shot 30 crows today, drove back home under pink floyd (don't forget roger waters is coming to AA on nov 21st) took a 1 hour nap at home, followed by some football game on tv, put my camo back on at 4 pm followed by 3 dove shot in haslett, pulled over at sushi place in southlake in full camo (they almost hit the panick button) ate 14 pieces of sushi and softshell crab, just drove back home under ACDC. what else can go wrong today.
thanks JJ

crows, or magpies may be controlled without a federal or state depredation permit when found committing or about to commit depredations on ornamental or shade trees, agricultural crops, livestock, or wildlife, or when concentrated in numbers and in a manner that constitutes a health hazard or other nuisance. Two together is a nuisance because they make to much noise so they are a noise nuisance.
