Had mine cleaned and inspected by Gunsmith last spring. I guess its time to ask for safety mods to be added.

I think it was worse in the pre 75 models. That's what mine was. The guns that would not allow you to open the bolt with the gun on safe.

I wonder how many of them had amateur trigger jobs performed? Mine did it after having the trigger set super light, and "slamming" the bolt closed on prairie dog shoots. My fault, not the manufacturer's.

Please PM me the serial numbers if you find them. My rifle was built/purchased in mid 60's.

Please PM me the serial numbers if you find them. My rifle was built/purchased in mid 60's. If you have to move the safety to the fire position to open the bolt, it's one they will modify. You are better off having a good gunsmith do the work and have him go over the trigger and adjust, if necessary. Remington will likely charge you for a new trigger that pulls at about 7-8 lbs. This is due to the lawsuits by people who ignore basic gun maintenance, safety and probably shouldn't handle firearms.

This goes along with what you posted earlier Slim, but I was thinking it was something else. I'm still searching. REMINGTON MODEL 700,CENTER FIRE RIFLES MFG BEFORE 1982 MODEL 600, 660, 721, 722 40-X RIFLES MFG BEFORE MARCH 1982 MODEL XP-100 TARGET PISTOL MFG BEFORE FEBRUARY 1975 RECALL: Remington Arms Company, Inc. is offering a safety modification program for certain bolt-action centerfire firearms manufactured prior to 1982, including the Model 700, Model 600, 660, 721, 722, 40-X bolt-action rifles (made before March 1982) and Model XP-100 target pistols made before February 1975. These firearms have a feature known as a bolt-lock that requires the safety to be placed in the off position in order to unload the gun. If you participated in this program, your firearm will be modified to eliminate the bolt-lock feature. The operation of your gun will not be otherwise affected. If you want assistance, call Remingtons toll-free consumer hotline at (877) 387-6691. I just found this one Slim
REMINGTON MODEL 700, SEVEN, 40-XB, 40-XC, & SPORTSMAN 78
RECALL: Remington Arms centerfire rifle Models 700, Seven, 40-XB, 40-XC and Sportsman 78 manufactured between July 29 and December 11, 1987, have been withdrawn from sale temporarily for replacement if trigger assembly mechanisms.
This action was taken because a limited number of rifles produced during that period may have an improperly manufactured part in the trigger assembly mechanism. Although it is unlikely, the defective part could break and cause the rifle to fire accidentally.
Remington Arms has launched a program to identify and recover all rifles made and sold during this period, and as a precaution, will replace the trigger assembly on every affected rifle without charge to the owner.
All Remington trade customers and individual rifle owners are being notified, and it is expected that this program will quickly identify owners of the affected rifles.
This notice applies only to those bolt action models listed. No other Remington firearms are involved.
If you have purchased one of these rifles since July 29, 1987, do not load it.
We ask that you call our Trigger Assembly Replacement Program at 1-800-634-2459 with the model and serial number of your rifle. From that number, we can tell you immediately if yours is one of the affected rifles, and if it is, how you can arrange for a free replacement of the trigger assembly.

you let the next owner know about the problem? I guess I should have. It was over a period of 20 years, and I chalked them both up to my unsafe practices of carrying the gun on a stalk or in the 4 wheeler rack with a round in the chamber. gun was pointed at the sky both times.

I've never heard of this issue before. You'd think something that serious would have been more known.
Also, every one of the people that were hurt or killed were hurt or killed because the person holding the gun screwed up by not knowing where the gun was pointed.
Had they practiced proper gun safety this wouldn't be an issue.

CNBC is using a family who's son was killed by the mother pointing a loaded rifle in an unsafe direction to smear Remington. If you keep a Remington trigger clean and adjusted properly it is safe. This family sued Remington, instead of taking personal responsibility for multiple bad decisions that cost their innocent son his life. It's the American way...
If you allow it to get gunked up and/or adjust it improperly, it will very likely go off. If it goes off and you are pointing it at someone, they will likely be killed. Pretty simple, actually. Multiple failures in common sense usually lead to bad things happening.

Its very rare to have it happen on a factory trigger, but one thats been dicked with by somebody who shouldn't have is another story Like most 1911s and Ar's I see day in and out.
Working in the Gun industry now for 6 years I can't tell you the times I have had a gun brought to me because they tried something they should not have and it failed. People buy these guns and mess with them because they read something with no concept of how it works and make a something safe very dangerous.

I had a guy blow a hole in the arm rest of my high seat when I was guiding. For some reason I was slow getting out of the truck or I would have been standing there to take the gun so he could get down.
At the time it seemed that the rap was on the ADLs and not the BDLs, but I dunno.

Thanks 7mm TX LAB. I'm going to contact them.
I have a Rem 700 in 222 caliber that I bought at the Ft Worth gun show about 20 years ago. I was walking with it SAFETY ON after I got it and it did discharge. I thought I must have done something wrong so didn't think much about it. Then, it did it again and I took it to a very competent gunsmith for repair. He supposedly fixed it and it didn't do it again until last year. This time, the safety was off and I had my finger off the trigger just fixing to fire at a deer. When these discharges occurred my finger was nowhere near the trigger.
Yes, CNBC is liberal and this is good stuff for the anti gun crowd. However, it really is a defective firearm that Remington evidently knew about for years. I just wish I had known about it.
Without a sense of urgency, nothing ever happens.

Gotta be the older ones that you couldn't open bolt with safety on It is. Got one. Ticks me off they won't fix it for free! They want me to pay for shipping both ways and 25 bucks for the mod(this was a couple of years ago but I doubt it has changed). Ridamndiculous! Hand me down from my dad who never knew about the recall. Maybe this bad publicity will make it a free mod.
