Not sure if this is the right section or not, but thought a lot of you use a 700 class Remmington out in the field. Please move if not in the right spot.
Please note that I didn't get to see the whole promo, but a special will be aired at 8pm CDT on CNBC tongiht.
Was in the home office this morning and my wife had the TV on. Heard something about Remmington and 700 so went out to the TV. Caught the end of it, but it looks like Remmington 7XX models are firing by themselves and they have know about it for awhile.
Like I stated above I didn't hear /see the whole promo so please watch/research this issue yourself. This is just a heads up.

This is a decades old story stirred up again by a rabidly anti-gun "network".
Why would anyone be watching CNBC in the first place.

Why would anyone be watching CNBC in the first place. Yep. Lots of folks messed around with and "Bubba Rigged" or ran their triggers gunked up and had accidental NEGLIGENT discharges while pointing their rifle at a person. Of course, their next move was to sue Remington for their own careless and reckless handling of the rifle. Rule number one is broken every time a person is shot.. Go to the range between now and rifle season. It's clear why people are maimed and killed. It's actually surprising how more are not shot. "NEVER point any firearm at anything you are not willing to destroy"Pretty simple, & every year there are examples of people failing to follow this common sense rule. It's easier to sue a gun maker, than it is to accept personal responsibility for injuring or killing a person..

Oulufinn hit the nail on the head. There are many people who do not practice safe firearm handling techniques and when something catastrophic occurs, they blame their firearm on their own inept handling habits.
Rule #1:
"NEVER point any firearm at anything you are not willing to destroy"

An incompetent person messing with trigger pull is a bad recipe. My dad has a sporterized Springfield 30-06 and one of his buddies lightened the pull. If you are not careful and just throw the safety off it can fire. He slmost took out a freinds tire one time when unloading it.

Channel 5 just showed military and police officers discharging the 700's by just taking it off "safety", They never touched the trigger. I think military and police snipers take pretty good care of their equipment, at least that's my experience with the tact guys at my previous agency. We all know NBC and most media is anti gun, but it didn't appear to be anti gun, just informative.

My Dad's 700 (Now Mine) accidently discharged when taking it off safe to open the bolt years ago. At the time the trigger was very light and was soon adjusted back to 4-5 lbs. I did find this information on-line.
According to an internal Remington memo, the actual sequence required to make a gun malfunction, or "trick," is to place the safety between the "safe" and "fire" positions, pull the trigger, and then place the safety in the "fire" position - which causes affected guns to fire. The company offered a Safety Modification Program, which unless it receives another extension will expire on December 31, 2010. Basically, they will take your gun and, at your expense, remove the bolt lock mechanism to allow the bolt handle to be opened with the gun on safe. This applies to Remington models 700, 721, 722, XP-100, 600, 660, and 40-X bolt action rifles and pistols.

So, in other words, the trigger (And very likely the sear engagement) needs to be adjusted improperly or allowed to get full of crud AND the trigger and safety must be manipulated to create this condition..... Not to mention having the gun pointed in an unsafe direction. This is an attack on Remington by a known anti-gun outfit.
I'll gladly take any of these "death traps" off the hands of anyone who deems them unsafe. (For a very cheap price, of course. Since they are so dangerous.)

Being aware of the issue makes me extra cautious; I would never get rid of my 700. Great memories(other than the one) and fantastic shooter.

Remington did a recall back in the late 70's or early 80's for this very same reason. Are these older actions or new one's.
Yes! A Weatherby does kill them deader.

Yes sir. Agreed. Extra caution is always a good thing. The only point I'm trying to make is that the actual "Problem" that CNBC is pushing in a dishonest manner is actually improper adjustment and/or poor/improper cleaning of the trigger group. Not some devious coverup by Remington, as they imply.
Modifying the bolt is simply another layer of safety for the adjustment/cleaning issue.

I have seen 2 700's fire without pulling the trigger one had the trigger lightened and went off when set down hard at camp and shot into a tree the other was factory and went off when the guy started opening the bolt I Know remington fixed that one and it was a older 700 I have 2 and dad has 2 and would never sell them. I firmly believe never have a loaded gun pointed in a direction where it could hurt some one if it went off

When I worked the trigger over on my latest model 700, all of them in fact, I beat that thing around just short of abusing the rifle. Never had a problem with it or any other 700 I've worked the trigger on. I guess if you just got the trigger where you wanted it and didn't check the safety aspect of it these things could happen. Or like posted above, if someone didn't properly maintain the rifle.
There is more to doing a trigger job on a 700 than turning a screw, no matter what some people say.

Their expert, Jack Belk, is a former custom gunsmith who ripped off a bunch of people when he went broke. He's a paid shill who makes money bashing Remington as an "Expert" witness. He is a man with no honor.
Taking apart a Remington trigger & understanding how it works illustrates the importance of correctly adjusting, maintaining and doing the required safety checks after adjusting them.
CNBC is taking it's usual one sided stand on these types of issues.

My last 700 was an older one and you had to place the gun on fire to open the bolt.
It fired on me twice when pushing it off safe to unload during the time I owned it.

Allegations say that a hunting rifle is prone to firing without pulling the trigger.
Just wanted to see what you guys thought about this and if anyboy has had this problem before?
