I just bought a Remington 870 and was wondering what I had to do to shoot slugs from it? Also if I did would it affect the way that it shoots the regular shells after I use it to shoot slugs?

You should be able to shoot rifled slugs as the gun is, read the back of the box of slugs to see what choke you can shoot them through. Most slugs can be fired through any chokethat is full or less, but best results are usualy with IPC. Most guns come with a mod choke which will do you just fine, and no it wont hurt the gun.

Be sure and use the Foster type slugs out of the smooth bore. Not the sabots.
My dedicaited pig gun likes the Green Remington 1 oz Fosters.
It ain't easy being me.

Ouch!! It gives me the willies to think about shooting a slug out of a choked barrel. I admit I use Cyl choke tubes or a shorty 870 that has a fixed CYL choke, so I haven't really tried using a choked barrel and I can't contradict the guys that do it all the time.
But surely there's a less risky way to go about things. Lots of things can go wrong with a shotshell to make the slug a little off-center going down the bore - probably more common than not. It can't do a choke tube or a barrel choke any good to get hit with that baby, especially the thin, stamped-out barrel of a pump or auto. I know I'm being a sissy, but I spent many years playing the shotgun games and I know how much trouble a choke can be if it starts throwing irregular patterns at flying targets. It may not be as risky in a quality O/U with back-bored (over-sized) barrels, but a tighter barreled pump means less room for error at the business end.
I'm probably way off base here. Has anyone done any pattern testing with a choked barrel before and after it's been fed a diet of slugs? Maybe it's not disastrous, but it's hard to imagine that it does things any good if that same barrel is going to be used for wing shooting. Just MHO, of course.
