Don't swim after decoys. New ones are cheaper than dying trying to retrieve them. smile

And don't lock your keys in the vehicle after getting your feet wet. confused2

Hopedale,
You failed to mention Baikal... that does in fact start with a "B"... bolt

The best tip that I can offer an up and coming waterfowler is to learn all you can from each and every outing. Spend ALOT of time learning Duck I.D. cause that's very important. And remember never to not out-shoot the "pro's" in the blind cause you'll probably be walking home... Have fun and I will say that it'd be a much better world if more kids like you would be as excited about conservation as you are. Good luck and be safe!

Practice shooting moving clay targets.

Learn to ID ducks in pictures first and then look for things to identify them when they are flying. This is one of the hardest parts for new duck hunters.

Leave the calls alone until you get pretty good or practice later in the morning after the first waves have already left.

wear eye and ear protection

hunting from a layout blind (even a camo tarp thrown over you) can work great in the right places.

true in the winter but I'm not wearing a mask when its 80 down here and I'm pretty sure they can see your face without it but a beard helps. I'm starting mine this weekend.

I don't think the young lady will be growing a beard.

+1! There is nothing like getting the grummble (you know which one I am talking about) and having to run to the boat so you can hang your cheeks over the side. Then after you feel better you realize you don't have any "poop paper" and all you can find is your neoprene decoy glove...

R.I.P. left handed decoy glove....

read books and get educated before spoiling him on the dovefields with thousands of dove. kids will get spoiled quickly and then getting bored when they are no birds even faster, they dont have patience nowadays

patience is virtue...

Wear a neoprene shell belt on the outside of your waders, easy access to your shells, but most importantly, if you fall over in the water your waders will not fill full of water, so keep it tight.

It is not a matter of "IF" it will be "When" if you hunt enough. Yes you will either fall out of the boat when getting in/out, or you will step off in a deep hole. I fell out of a boat this last Feb. fishing. Tight jacket waist band and tight wader belt saved my day in 40F water.

See, I heard you jumped in, and if I recall properly it actually was during duck season, not in February (which is why I wasn't there)... you just chose the wrong activity that day laugh

like some others have already said, always bring toilet paper. always have an extra set of clothes in the truck cuz you will eventually fall over or trip. and whatever you do, dont forget your gun and shells. you can kill ducks without dekes or blowing on calls but you cant kill them without a gun and ammo. alot of the other accessories arent needed just make life easier. you can get those as you go. good luck this year

I have found that diversity adds balance to things. And thats why i shoot a diversity of animals. so i can bring balance to my freezer
