what do you think the percentage of processors in Texas actually give you "your" deer back? My buddy and I are having a debate.

I was just working there and every deer we cut and proccesed went back to the same person that brought them.

Most large places don't give you back your deer if you get it ground up, made into sausage, etc. If you ask for steaks, you'll most likely get yours. Just ask the processor. Big ones tend to do large batch grinding.

No offense to processors but I just rather do it myself unless I want something special like summer sausage, jalapeno cheese, etc.

I dunno, I've heard that you usually don't get your deer back but then I've never asked my processor. I guess I really don't want to know because what could I do about it anyway.

Process your own! It's not hard, just takes a bit of time.

Actually I did process my own for about 20 years and enjoyed doing it. Thanks to my spiteful ex I don't have any of my grinders or equipment anymore. I've only been using a processer for a couple of years now. It is kinda convenient to drop it off.

Depending on who I take it to and how I want it prepared it takes anywhere from 1 week to 1 month.

Bon Ton Grocery in Uhland takes about a week to grind mine into HB/Bacon and/or steaks. Hudson's on S. Congress in Austin takes up to a month for Jalapeno/Cheese sausage. Granzin's in New Braunfels takes about the same.

I drop mine off at a friends place that does his own processing. I pay him for it and I get my deer back. Just a local guy that does it for his family and once or twice a year for me.

I do process my own, but thumbs up to Kuby's. I do like them to make me sausage.

only way to know is doing it yourself, oh yeah and it is much cheaper too.

There is a post a while back that showed how to make a grinder using a hand crank grinder and a motor/pulley system, it was for about 100 bucks and looked great.

Hudson's you will not get your own back. I've asked.

I went to Miller's ( I think) in Llano. I believe they do a batch grind, but don't know for sure. Although I did take a look around, and they had some NASTY deer being brought in. The good thing about it though, is that they kept all of that separate from the rest of the other deer that looked fine. So hopefully the larger places at least do something like that so you don't get green gut shot meat mixed into your's.

Po'Boys in Merit you will get your deer back.... it's kept separate and one deer at a time.

Raggedy Creek in Crowell is the same way.

Don't know for sure but I bet it's a rule that they have to get it back. I would think that they were worried about cross-contamination.

The place that my Papa take his to doesn't give you your own deer back. Last time we were in there, we dropped one off and he payed for what he wanted done. The guys asked "do you want to get it now"

Anyone used Hall's in Coleman? Im hoping you get your deer back there.

txhunter24, we've been using Hall's since they opened up. Steve and his family are great people. Never had any issues or doubt that I was getting my deer back. Stop in and talk to Steve you won't meet a nicer guy from the Coleman area. He has relatives that do the taxidermy work over in Bronte, Hall of Fame Taxidermy and do great work as well.

They vaccum seal everything except your ground venison or breakfast sausage. Good luck this year!! Your hunting out closer to Ballinger, right?? We are North of Ballinger between Winters and Novice....

I use Miller's Bang and Bow Taxidermy in Belton. I know the owner and he gives your deer back that you bring in. He does it one deer at a time. When gun season opens up and he starts getting pounded then it will take a couple of weeks to get your deer back but I took one in opening weekend. I had 20lbs of hot links made and I had her back in 5 days but then again, it was his 1st deer ofthe year.

Cox processing is near comanche. I've never used them but know of alot who do.
