After dealing with Nikon's customer service I will never own another one.
IMO Leupold vxII or better, or you might as well buy something else.

What's your price range? I'd try and get a VXII if you can.

I have the Nikon that you described and I like it just fine. I sure wouldn't turn down a Leupold though. The Nikon I own came on a rifle I bought.

I have a Buckmaster 3x9 on a 270 and it has been a great scope. I would probably choose the Nikon over a VX-I

Well I need it to be good enough that I can tell if a deer will meet AR's at 185 yards.

Buckmaster.
I have that specific one on one of my rifles and it does the trick. I can see inncredible at night under a full moon. Sucks in a lot of light and it is very clear. Unless you are going VX III or up, go with the Nikon.

At our Gander here in Corsicana they have all their scopes mounted on a wood stock so you can look thru them. Pretty neat set up. You can see for yourself the difference between a $100 scope and a $600 scope. It would make a decision like this alot easier...

I've had both and had good luck with both. I would take the Nikon over the VX-1.

I would get a Leupold which is us made over the Nikon Philippine made scope. The Redfeild is made by the Leupold company at there plant. Redfeild has a 4 x 12 by 40 that should be in your price range. Leupold has a excellent warranty it dose no matter who bought the scope they will fix it.
