Why is the 6mm rifle not too popular. I know there is a lot of them around but not as many as other calibers. If one was a good deal would you take it or pass on it????

I will probably get crap for the following, but in a nut shell I think it's because it's not a Wally World round. What I really mean by that is there are other rounds that are very comparable in over performance that are more common; such as the 243. Therefore, not only are they more readily available (hence the term Wally World round) and also cheaper as an effect of being more common.
In the realm of this dicussion, i think guys who get these so called speciality rounds are really looking to have something different than there neighbor. If that's the intent, then that's fine and I have no qualms about that. As long as they admit that is what they are doing. But to say a 6mm remington can do something a 243 can't is hog wash, imo. Or a 300 Weatherby mag and 300 RUM is "far superior" to a 300 win mag is the same thing to me.
I'm a dude who likes long barrels!

I own and shoot a 6mm because a friend of mine reloaded 6mm. I like it just fine but when it comes to buying ammo I wish I had bought a 243.

6mm Remington is better if you reload. It has more case capacity for powder, which equals higher velocities. he only downside is if the rifle is older and marked as a .244 Remington it won't stabilize heavier bullets.

he only downside is if the rifle is older and marked as a .244 Remington it won't stabilize heavier bullets. And thats why the 243 took off like wildfire while the 6mm/244 fell flat on its face. I still reach for a 6mm over the 243 most of the time.

I like it because it does not seem to be that popular. It's one of those calibers that I'm stockpiling brass for as I plan on keeping it for a very long time. I've never killed anything with mine, but my son shot his first 2 hogs with it. Bullets will always be available for it in a large selection so I'll hang onto it.
A hog is nothing more than a bullet receptacle.

Had one of the older ones and it stabilized 100 gr bullets just fine, and yes it had the slower twist. It seems about the time the 6mm remington came out JcAck O'Connor and a few other writers had a beef with Remington and would not promote their new guns, Winchester all the way. Matter of fact years later Jim Carmicheal (SP) wrote in Outdoor Life that Jack once told him he thought that might have been a disservice to the shooting community, that the 280 remington and 6mm remington were every bit as good of rounds as the 270 and 243 winchesters if not a little better. Also he stated that most of the writers that said the 6mm would not stabilize teh heaver bullets probally never tried it jsut took someone elses "word"
lf the saying "Liar, Liar your pants on fire" were true Mainstream news might be fun to watch

From what my Sierra manual says (1975 and their newest copy) says the slower twist would stabilize the 100 gr roundnose sp's within good enough reason for hunting but not extreme accuracy.

My dad had a 6mm custom built for me when I was two years old (1972), by a gunsmith in Gilmer, Tx. I took my first deer with it and many after that. I love it and of course would not sell it for the world. But when I do see ammo for it I buy all I can afford. The True Value in Brady always has 6mm Rem in stock.

I honestly like the 6MM more, that being said as mentioned above alot of people hated Remington at the time it came out which is why it is so un-popular today if it had the attention the .243 and .270 was harolded with I think we would not see either of the later at all today.

I have 6mm's and 243's and they are back in the gun rack. I went back to a 280 Rem. for knock down power. Some of the West Texas leases are saying 270 up or don't hunt. Big deer can be killed with small callibre rifles but only with great shot placement. Big deer need a big calibre to consistantly put them down. No one talks about the deer that ran off after being shot with a 243. If you can't take the kick go to a 7-08 or a 8mm Mauser.

I ahve shot at least 20 deer with a 6mm and none of them have gone more that 5 yards. Of course I shot them all in the neck.

The 6mm Remington uses the same case as the 257 Roberts and the 7x57 Mauser. Gives great case capacity and drives the heaviest 6mm bullets at adequate velocities to take any thin skinned game in Noth America. It's a little hard on barrel life but keeping it clean and cool it will last a lifetime. Simply a great but often overlooked choice.

Keith's Ace Hardware always has several options for 6mm, cause one of the managers shoot a 6mm. I do too and wouldn't trade it for the world.

The Bench Rest crowd is pretty heavily into the 6MM BR. That ought to say something about accuracy.

remington for some reason dosen't have all that great of luck marketing rounds.
off the top of my head, the only rounds that are a huge success for remington have been the .22-250 (a wildcat round)the .25-06 and the 7mm mag and the 7mm-08, which is based on a winchester case. i guess you can also count the .223 although from what i've read/been told it was made for the military first and then as a sporting round.
winchester has alot of success with their cartridges, look at the success of the .300 wsm compared to the .300 saum.
i know that gun writers have alot to do with the popularity of some rounds, jack o'connor single handedly made the .270 a hit with america.

The 6mm Remington is a great little round. The last antelope buck I shot in 2008 fell to a single shot at around 275 yards. I was shooting 85 grain Nosler Partitions pushed to over 3,250 fps. The buck took the shot broadside and dropped in his tracks, he then jumped back up and made a death run in a semicircle for about 10-15 yards and fell over dead. The bullet gave complete penetration taking out a rib on both sides. My father used the same rifle that year to take a mule deer buck at 80 yards. The bullet struck the deer on the point of the shoulder and he folded up like a scalded spider. I know a guy that has bagged several elk and one bighorn ram with his 6mm with no problems.

Or a 300 Weatherby mag and 300 RUM is "far superior" to a 300 win mag is the same thing to me. They have more capacity. Not far superior, but they are. Both of those rounds have a larger case than the win mag.
