Oh, I thought maybe you were one of the Swamp People. grin

After I clean my BP rifles, I run a couple of patches with rubbing alcohol. That will get just about all the moisture out. Then I swab the barrel with a mop dipped in Marvel Mystery Oil. Just one pass. That works for me.

Some people use hot water to heat the barrel up or a hair dryer. I don't use water to clean my barrel and just haven't seen the need to heat it with a blow dryer. However you do it, you have to get all the moisture out of the barrel after cleaning.

If you've got four different guns that are rusting up....you probably also have a storage problem! Do you keep your guns inside or in your garage? They need to be kept in a dry space and away from extremes in temperature.

I think you problem may be with the bore butter. I've tried it in the past and have got similiar results. It's better as a patch lube than protecting from rust (although there are others that swear that bore butter works for them).

As Primitive Hunter stated, use alcohol after you dry. This is important to rid your barrel of water. I prefer denatured as there is less water in it.

Always check the next day for rust. BP guns generally need to be re-oiled about every month.

Oil works best in BP. I use Birchwood Casey oil and never had a problem. Just make sure you clean them out with alcohol before shooting because petroleum based oils will turn to tar.

Take your 50 cal brass brush and coat it with Birchwood Barricade. Use the Barricade generously and just scrub the barrel with the soaked brush. If you just can't get it out, take a smaller brass brush (about 30 caliber) and wrap some Scotchbrite around it. Again, soak it with Barricade. But don't swab the barrel too much with this because it will remove metal. As a last resort, Google about using electrolysis to clean a barrel. You can do it with stuff around the house.

To clean my barrels (and locks), I use "Black Powder Bore Cleaning Solvent" that I buy from Track of the Wolf. I don't use water.

To properly clean black powder residue you will need to flush the bore with hot, preferably boiling, water. Add a little liquid soap to it as well and scrub it good with a bore brush. After scrubbing, run a scraper down the barrel to the bottom and rotate it a few times to make sure it is scraped clean. Also pull the nipple out and clean it well. Rinse again with clean hot water until the rinse water comes out clear. If you use very hot water, this will not only dissolve the salt peter & sulphur residue from the burned powder, but will quickly evaporate. Run a couple of clean dry patches down the bore to make sure it is clean and dry, then run a well saturated patch with Break Free CLP down the bore. If all surfaces are cleaned this way and then wiped down with Break Free, you will not have any rusting problems. Run a dry patch down your bore before loading again.

I have been a Civil War reenactor for the last 13 years and have burned a lot of black powder. Using this proceedure, I do not have rusting problems. I have seen many rifles that were not properly cleaned quickly rust terribly.

This is a tried and proven method. I only note that it is not the only method and whether it is the "best" method is purely subjective. I don't use hot water. I don't use water at all and I'll match my bores with anybody. As far as the water method, the only reason to use hot water is to heat the barrel to speed up the drying of the bore. Cold water cleans just as well. All BP residue is water soluable.

The stuff I use from TOW reduced my cleaning time for the barrel tremendously. I run a spit patch betwen each shot so residue is minimal. I run a soaked patch to take off the loose stuff and wet the barrel, a few strokes with a soaked brass brush to scrub the stubborn stuff, and then a couple more soaked patches to clean out everything I scrubbed loose. Then a couple of dry patches, a couple of alcohol patches, and a mop soaked in Mystery Marvel Oil.

Again, I'm not knocking the hot water method. I did it for a while. My current method just works quicker, less messy, and better for me. On my percussion rifle, it's a short process. On my flinter, you have to take the lock out and clean/oil it every time so it takes longer.

Not the only method, but i use hot water and soape as well. Wash it out good, rinse well, let it dry, whipe down exterior surfaces with oil, swab barell with oil.

Never had a problem and the gun has been sitting since last year.

I also use the hot soapy water method, then after running a few clean patches through the barrel I get out the air compressor and blow out the remaing moisture from the nipple end..then I scrub the barrel again with windex,,,I also do this with corrosive ammo for the AK----again, use compressor to blow it dry, then a couple patches with Otis tactical bore cleaner, clean patches then lube with very light coat of Break Free LP, this is strictly a Lubricant/preservative, the other Break Free is also a cleaner... Sounds like a lot of work but Im a fanatic about my firearms..

I'm down in Liberty County where charcoal brickets will grow mold.
With the breech end submerged in a plastic coffee can I scrub out with soap and water and a tight patch on the cleaning jag. Keep at it 'til you don't get color on new patches. Then dry as good as can including using hot water for the rinse. Then oil, lots of oil.
I rather have to de-oil it later to prevent misfires than have corrosion. I can get rid of oil but I caint replace lost steel.
