And the keep wind at your back, or coming left to right/right to left so the ducks decoy into you and not over your head.

accept the fact that you will likely fall in the water at some point. walking in waders is a learned skill... and there is always an unknown hole or stump. walk slowly and pick up your feet. paitence is important too. be sure to mark your birds when you hit them. although wounded, a downed bird can swim pretty quick! enjoy the sport and welcome to it. good luck

Puddle ducks cant feed in water much deeper than a foot.
Rig your decoys with twice as much line as the depth your hunting.
Dont stare at ducks that are working you.
You need a roof to hunt Mallards.
Learn to call on a single reed.

Learn to call on a single reed. I wouldnt say you would HAVE to have a roof, I don't use one and I've been killing mallards at the same spot since I was your age. It would help though. Also, It is a lot easier to learn using a double reed call. Just to make it easier for a new hunter. You can also get some instructional DVD's so that you can listen and learn to call. Good luck out there!

Watch and learn, learn to follow through on your shot, clean up after yourself, and probably most important, learn to talk smack when someone else misses, falls, or anyting else you don't want to happen to ya!

Welcome to the sport -- My son has introduced me to a number of young ladies that love duck hunting--- suggest as follows: (1) Use a wading staff if the bottom is questionable (2) Call very little as you learn (3) Get a whistle it's easier than a call and can work depending on the type ducks in your area (4) Buy the best shells you can afford (5) Be patient for the birds to work in close --This is the hardest part -- knowing when they are as close as they're going to get-- don't kick yourself if you pass the shot and they leave the law of averages will favor the patient hunter

Lots of good hunting advice. How about some safety...
Use a wading staff if it's below freezing. It's just not worth freezing to death. I almost went face down last year in calf deep water (submerged root) and I have excellent balance. My staff saved me. It was 7 degrees.
Always were a life jacket in the boat. You can't swim if your knocked out or have the wind knocked out of you by something you hit on the way in.
The more you move in cold water, the faster hypothermia sets in.
While waders and wetsuits may be made out of the same material. Waders fit too loosely to provide insulation in the water.
If your waders are full, remember you'll probably have to crawl out on shore. Water weighs 8.4lbs per gallon. Depending on how loose your waders are, you may suddenly be 30-50lbs heavier.
Watch the sunrise. Be safe and have fun.
Hunting advice... SBEs go click. A-5s go boom.
Thought for the day: Ducks were almost hunted to extinction long before camo was invented.
