I'm new on a lease in Cherokee. One of the older hunters on the lease says you can determine if a deer is a buck or doe by the droppings.
Doe - leave lose pellets Bucks - leave pellets that are stuck together.
Anybody ever heard this before or is the old timer pulling my leg?

I have always heard that. I never watched a deer relive himself and then went and checked the results, but if I see clumped droppings near my feeder I assume its a buck. Maybe wishfull thinking.

I don't believe you can't determine the sex from droppings. I think the size and makeup of the pellets are mostly affected by the diet, not the sex.

Yes and he is absolutley right. Bucks and Does diets are different, the Bucks will eat more forage from trees and young shrub growth such as shoulder brush, skunk brush, poison ivy, and there favorite, young hackberry trees, thus making there waste clump togeather.Want to see better Bucks on your place, try in the spring and fall going around and shredding young trees and brush tops and creating new growth for the deer. This is the most overlooked management tool available to Texans and most will cut down plow up and plant food plots over something natural that is more beneficial to the herd and not only that....they like it.

Absolutely!........I get all charged up when I see a big ole clump of poop at my stand. I've witnessed it first hand and I know it's true.

I have heard that as well, but experience has taught me that the only way to be sure of the sex by the droppings is to be able to see them fall. Although, Hightech's explanation sounds good.

Sory to tell you that this is not always true. I work in the GAN (Grazing Land Animal Nutrition) Lab here at TAMU. We studdy fecal samples from all Rangeland Grazing animals. Cows, Deer, Elk etc. We work with Ranchers and experiment stations. we have done work on the fecal reminents of deer and I know first hand that the dietary make up that an animal intakes has everything to do with the makeup of the fecal matter. Does as well as bucks feed on the same woody plant material and the same forbs. The majority of grass are too old there for too high in lignin content for deer to digest completley. The yonger the grass the more pallatable, and digestable it is to Ruminent animals souch as whitetailed deer the make up of the poop is mostly due to the amounts of nutrients that the animal is digesting. When the poop is stuck together this means that the animal is intaking high amounts of crude protien and the sex of the animal is not always determined by this. this dose not mean that when the poop is seperated the animal is malnurished. The best way to determine is on the size and amount of the poop. Generally bucks are much bigger than does and there fore have larger pellets and in more amounts. so instead of looking at the consistency look at the amount and size. Now generaly mature deer have more fecal matter passing threw them and it compacts in their intestine. so in some cases this is true. But the more correct answer is that if it is stuck together than the deer is going to be a mature deer. this dose not mean buck or doe. but it is a good sign of mature animals. hope this helps you guys

HMMM! Is that a determination on deer that are lab raised or actual deer in the wild. I am not a Wildlife biologist nor a lab technician but I am with the wildlife management program that TPWD sponsors and have been working with one of their biologists and according to his theory. Does and Bucks diets are similar but the Bucks do eat MORE forage from trees and shrubs unlike a doe that eats more grasses thus causing A Buck Whitetail Deers fecies to tend to clump togeather. But this is with deer in the wild and not in a lab. I would like to see a report or a copy of one. I do like to learn. Thanks.

I believe that the Buck dung is usually a good sign that there is a mature buck in the area. I also look for the big rubs on the trees as well as huge tracks, to defend my dung theory. Looking for other sign to varify there is a mature buck in the area is always the best indicator you are hunting in the right place.

The only thing I know. If it looks like poop, smells like poop and tastes like poop. Its probably poop.
24 hours in a day. 24 beers in a case. Coincidence, I think not.

WELL, You guys just busted my bubble because my Dad told me his Dad told him the same thing that the big clumped up poop WAS Buck poop and that the rut had something to do with the change in the bucks system that caused the clumping of the poop.. I do know for a FACT that by watching bucks and does relieve themselves in my food plot and upon examination of the droppings that the clumped up poop DID come from bucks and the loose pellets from does, I know this for a fact from several occasions, I do more videoing from my stand than shooting and therfore I get to observe the habits for a longer period of time.. I have also documented something that might interest you fellas! On several occasions I have had bucks run does into my food plot like the does were in heat but the does to my surprise would stop and urinate in front of the buck, you would think this would be to let the buck know how far in estrus the doe was. well as it has turned out in my observations, more likely than not, the buck upon smelling the urine would totallty ignore the doe, only thing I can figure is the doe is telling the buck that she is not in heat and to leave her alone.. I am fortunate where I hunt here in east Texas to have a high concentration of deer and I get to watch a lot of crazy things in that food plot..

Dr. James Kroll was on North American Whitetail show the other day and said that was not necessarily the case. Lots of times there would be clumps when a deer stood up from resting and went number #2.....hard to explain one napping or resting near a feeder, but i imagine diet has a lot to do with it.

Saw a biologist on tv last sunday say that the pellets are stuck together after the deer are bedding up... and it is supposedly a myth that clumped pellets indicate a buck... make sense to me.
