Coons getting to our feeders is a problem many of us share. There have been a variety of ideas thrown around as to how to keep the critters away....and I've tried pretty much all of them. Tack strips, greasing the legs, yada, yada, yada.. Well, I heard it suggestewd on here about putting PVC over your feeder legs. Then I saw some for sale at the Hunters Extravagnaza in Ft. Worth....and thought they were a bit expensive. So, since I had tried the other ideas with no luck, I decided to make me some and see if they worked. Since installing them on two feeders not one coon has made it up the legs. In the end, it may not prove to be 100%, but it has definitely made a huge difference as their success rate stands at zero at this writing. These things are simple and cheap to make. Thought I would share it and here is a pic:

Thats a determined little sucker. I think if you hang the PVC with a wire, to make it wobble more, he may not make it up. Mine work pretty good like that.

It wobbles...

Notice the trap in the background, I caught 22 of them that month. No more problem.

Like you said it may not be fool proof, but the pvc on the legs sure stopped them from climbing them at my old lease. It was nothing to see 10 coons under the feeder everynight.

Mine may be dumb.....

Flip side, look at your pvc and look at mine. Yours are closer to the ground and allows them to get on easier. Also, you don't say and I can't see it, but mine are attached with a small chain about 18" long. My pvc rotates when they try to get on them. Maybe you could show us how your pvc is mounted?

Are the pipes attached to the feeder legs so they rotate, or does the PVC surface make it more difficult for them to get a grip?

I can think of several ways to make the pipes rotate on the legs, making it virtually impossible for anything to climb up. It would be the same principle as those rope ladders at the carnivals, but even worse.

As I blew gogburn's photos up, they look like they are screwed in place to the legs....and his photo doesn't illustrate the the coon made it to the top.

Dan - Mine are installed using a small chain which I attach to the top of the feeder leg and then to the tube. They can't rotate over and over, but they move quite a bit....so much so that the coons haven't made it up yet. My tubes are 30" long and I think the chains were 20".

My coons are not as smart as gogburn's, buut they are a he!! of a lot bigger...

If you are referring to my setup just look at the second video, you can see the PVC rotating when the coon falls off. They are chained on at the top just like everyone else's.

As far as closer to the ground, I don't see how that matters since they can climb the whole pole. 2', 3', 4' , they are going to reach it.

It works but not 100% as you said. It only takes one to get up there and spin the plate and it's lunch for everybody. Trap 'em, kill 'em, no more problem.

Click on the film picture to see the video.

The only reason they work are because the coons try to climb it from the top, like they do everything else, it spins, they fall.

Once they figure out they can climb it from underneath their weight pulls the PVC against the leg, it doesn't spin and up they go. Not all of the coons could figure it out. Some figured it out but still fell off.

The one in the video had it nailed.

Cool! Thanks for the vids. Dan may have an idea in making them spin continually...

Try putting some (bearing) grease on that pipe.

I greased up a bird feeder once (squirrels) and it was quit entertaining.

I used some bearing grease at one point, but it didn't last very long, just dissapated.

Use a bungy strap and then you get not just the spin but a fast one if they turn it enough!! plus the PVC will go up and down also, just my thoughts

I just put crisco on the legs of mine every week or so and I've yet to get a picture of a coon climbing my feeder legs in a while.
