I've got a pheasant hunt in Kansas coming up and was wondering if any of you guys use a 20ga. for pheasant or should I just plan on taking the old 12 ga.?

IMO, a 20 is plenty of gun. Keep your distances reasonable and a good dose of 4-6 shot with IC-Modified choke. My favorite is #5 - little harder to find if you don't reload, but it is out there. You cannot go wrong with either one - pick the one that you are most comfortable with. My 12 ga. has been sitting in the safe since I re-discovered the wonderful 20s several years ago.

Use a 20ga all the time... Works great HB 4's and 5's and some time 6's in early season.. IC, LM or Mod chokes work great

I always used a 12ga.(all I had) But a 20ga will work too.

I like to use a 20, but just like with any sub-gauge - put the pellets on the bird.

I use a 12 but one of the old men that I hunt with that lives up there only uses a 20... but he is a helluva shot!

20 for me. I don't want to wag around the extra weight of the 12. Never had any problem hitting or killing pheasants with the 20.

if this is one of your first hunts.
take what you'll be most comfortable shooting. just so you can bring a couple of birds back with you.
if you've hunted pheasants and feel your a fair shot, 20ga makes it fun. and as stated before alot less weight to lug around all day.
personally i shoot a remmy 1100 lw in 20ga, but i've been shooting pheasants since i was about 8. killed em with every guage but 10, but the 20ga is more than enough to bring em down dead.

I used a light SxS 20 last year and man I tell you what. That is the way to go. Lighter to carry and quicker to shoulder, thus on the bird quicker when you get a wild flush. I have shot equally well with a 12, but the weight factor up against all the walking would make me choose a 20 again next time. Other than that, you would want the gun you shoot best with.

Take what you know you can hit the bird with. 12 or 20 have plenty of knock down. It is all about centering the bird in the shot pattern.

i use a 28, just because i love that little gun. but it does fine on them with the right choke and #6 shot. just gotta put it on em!

A light 20ga semi-auto (like the benelli montefeltro) and 1oz loads (like the kent fast lead shells) seems like the perfect combination for pheasants.

I hunt in Kansas every year and take both a 12 and 20. The 20 is an O/U and shoulders very fast, it's also light and easy to carry. I shoot 1oz loads of eaither 4's or 5's, I also carry a hand full of 3in 4's, they come in handy if the cover gets light and the birds flush a little farther out.
My 12 is a synthetic auto and I carry it when the weather gets bad. I can reach out a little further with it on windy days and I don't care how wet and muddy it gets.
As others have said, shoot what you are most comfortable with. There are 10-15 guys that we hunt with and its a good mix of 12s and 20s. Someday I will have a SxS 28 to take with me.

I shoot a 20 gauge o/u with 3 inch magnums (5 shot). Seems to get the job done just fine.
