![](http://i53.tinypic.com/111k0f7.jpg) I've got a dog kennel very similar to this. Its 4x8 and 5' tall. There is also extra support poles down the sides. My idea to make it a hog trap is to wire the chainlink at every available spot to the poles, stake it in the ground, put a 2x4 across the front so that the door will not open out and put a heavy duty spring on the door. Any suggestions or ideas?

I am a bit skeptical... Chainlink could never hold my 60lb husky, there is no way it will hold a hog that wants out. I would at a minimum cut a hog panel to half height and wire everything together with good wire. That said, by the time you figure out how to beef it up enough and put in a door you could have built a much better trap for the same effort and most likely dollars. On occasion I will weld for beer ![grin grin](/forum/images/graemlins/default/grin.gif) ww

I have had almost all animals you could think of behind chain link and never had a failure of the link. And if a monkey can't get out, a hog sure as heck wont. It really depends on the grade of chain link. I have some chain link that would hold anything. Including a bunch of wild hogs. I had them in it for over a month, and all they did was bend the link in a few spots from ramming it.

I have seen dogs and hogs make a large hole right in the middle of chain link.Sure seems impossible but i saw it.Imagine a big hole in the middle,A hog has incredible strength.

The kennel panel would look like a model of a blackhole afterwards. The wire would not break, but it would be seriously messed up, stretched, and straightend. These where not super heavy panels, but are probably on par with the ones in the pics. If she had not done it to several panels I never would have thought it possible. Crazy psycho dog. ww

my uncle owns a fence company i have a weld up hog trap that took less than a hour to make including the chain link on it. I have caught tons of hogs in it the only thing i found with chain link is that if you dont have a top they will climb out of the top make damn sure to keep the chain link tight and tie it off on the bottom bar really good like every other spot

We built our first trap using a dog kennel, however we removed the chain link and replaced it with hog panels from Gebo’s. We then built a guillotine gate with square tubing and angle iron. It worked good and caught a lot of hogs, but was stolen a few years ago.
If the chain link is already on there I guess It would be worth a try before replacing it. Growing up my parents had a pit bull that would bite the chain link when kenneled and roll tearing a hole in the fencing because he would rather be in the house. I recently had a German Shepherd that would do the same thing. He never got out but tried.
I would assume that a good size hog could go though the chin link if give enough time. We had a sow in our trap that broke several welds on the hog panel when we approached the trap. Personally I would want something stronger then chain link.

you can probably catch smaller hogs with no problem but the bigger ones might break out....
Put the kennel on Craigslist for $100 then go but you 3 - cattle panels and 10 steel post and build a figure 6 trap....

Like I said there are different grades. I can promise you they won't get out of the stuff I have. I have seed bears kept in chain link before. I have kept hogs in the chain link I have, and all they could do was dent it. Chain links come in vastly different strengths. Some is very thin, others are very thick, thicker than hog panels.

Trying to push through one hole, would only make the other holes smaller, unless the wire actually broke, or came untwisted on top.

If that is a store bought dog kennel it won't hold a hog. Might keep the runts in for a while, but not a medium size one. You'll go check it and your kennel will be torn up and no hog. Or at least none of the hogs we got around Gunter.

May have a good grade chain link wire but they can go through making a hole big enough to get out.Wouldnt try either just get hog panel.Have seen the same with cattle panel. If they can get a hole for their nose to fit in ;bye, bye hog.

ya. scared they might dig out. But they aint gonna lift it. Wouldn't worry about them digging out too much, but if you catch anything medium sized or larger you will have a pile of scrap metal. They'll go at it like battering rams until its toast. Not trying to be negative, but I've had pigs bend thinwall pipes like that without much problem.

I would br more worried about going up to trap with a bigger hog in it. I would definatly set it up where I could drive to it in the truck.

If you catch anything 150lbs pluss Watch out.
I like the idea about driving up to it. I would at least take a piece of heavy slick wire and wrap it around all the pipe and into the ends of the wire or they will get right out.
