I wanting to get a hand gun but am looking for input from those who know more than I. I am looking for a single gun multipurpose. Self protection as well as something i'll enjoy practicing with at the range.
I've been looking at the Springfield XDM handguns, however never shot one. Not sure what caliber 9mm vs .40 etc.
Just looking for yalls opinion and pros and cons for diff. calibers and likes and dislikes about the Springfield xdm.
Thanks.

I have two XD's including the XDm 45. There's all pros and no cons with either one. I carry one daily and the other would be just fine for competition being that it comes from the factory with a decent trigger and a match grade barrel. Give me a minute and I'll post targets.

It didn't win gun of the year multiple times for nothing.

XDm 45 from a good ways away. The circle in the top left with the center punched out is what an XD sub-compact will do.

XDm 40

XD40 sub-comp

The XDs are great, I've owned or shot all different sizes and calibers and loved them all and shot them all well. I've shot a couple of the XDMs but have never owned one. I really don't like them as much as the regular XDs though. They just didn't feel comfortable in my hands. The .40 is probably my favorite pistol caliber. It's a great combination of power and size, but if you are shooting factory ammo it can get pretty pricey as apposed to the 9mm. My 2 cents

Once i learned that i didn't "NEED" to kill something, and that if i did kill something all the fun stopped and work began, i was a much better hunter.

Thanks for all the quick replies. Looks like I'm headed in the right direction. So basically if i get the 9mm it will save me a lot in ammo cost. Thinking of getting the smaller barrel for concealment, doesnt seem to comprimise too much in acuracy looking at the targets. Thats my only concern with the more compact versions.

Man I'd sure hate to have to call out BIL for a range visit in a couple weeks when I come up there.

Dove Buster, I bought a 9mm XDm several months ago after renting several revolvers and pistols in varying calibers at my local indoor range. The 9mm is extremely accurate, easy to clean, and alot of fun to shoot. But, I quickly found 50 rds wasn't enough during practice, and I also quickly found it costing more and more money for ammo to enjoy practicing. All centerfire ammo is costly, while .22 ammo is very affordable. So I bought a second gun several weeks later in .22 caliber so I could practice shooting more rounds. Just about every weekend I shoot 50 rds in the 9mm and 200+ rounds in the .22. In retrospect, I wish I would have purchased a centerfire pistol that also had an optional .22 conversion kit available. Cost would have been about the same as buying two separate guns.

9mm.. go with the Glock 19... cheap practice ammo, easy to shoot, tons of holster options..
