Guys, for years everyone keaps telling me I need to get into duck hunting but never have. My favorite hunts are dove and quail hunts but everyone tells me to try duck. Well I'm off work for a little while an with open teal comeing up I was woundering if I can tag along with someone or a group. I don't need to hunt or even shoot a gun. I just want to get some hands on in it before I go make a fool out of myself. I have a small tank but I only get malards in it late in the season. I'm in west Texas Abilene area and willing to travel to meet someone so I can learn the sport more.

GOOD Luck those duck hunter are pretty sensitive and private. I think you will have to be blindfolded the whole time.

Thanks guys for the heads up. My hope is to learn the sport calling, ammo, cammo, and all the does and donts. I'm not wanting to steal someones honey hole. I know that feeling I'm a fisherman full time and someone take my spot means the next week 10 people will be there the following week.

You'll have better luck if you offer your spot as a hunt swap thing. Or chime in on this section more often.

You do have the right idea going with someone who already has the stuff before you get into the sport. Duck hunting is the best though...

Good luck.

aabass,

Your best bet is to ask questions and get to know folks on the forum. Also keep on the lookout for any THF get togethers. WhiskeyandMe will host them on his place everynow and again.

If nothing else, there is typically a THF group hunt. Try in get in on it. It will be a good chance to meet other folks on the forum and learn a little.

welcome

All the advice given is good- I'd be game to show you some of those do's and don'ts if it meant getting a greenhead or two... not the Hollywood variety- plenty of those around here.

Wasn't born in Texas, but I got there as fast as I could.

Ok, I may have a place to go just waiting to hear back from the city authority to give me the permision. I'm pretty sure they will let me cause they let dove hunters hunt around the lake yesterday for a fee of $3 I think I can do that. Now all I need is some lessons on calling, setting up my decoys, and the basics.
I have a few pm's I need to respond to. One off them is going with a guy on a open youth hunt with his boys. I think would be real cool. Only I'm looking still for somewere a little closer to home still. So all you west Texas hunters pm me or respond on here so we can get together knock them dead.

I don't think you'll have any trouble getting someone to come "show you the ropes" in the late season wink

I started just a couple of years ago and I have a VERY long way to go but you'd be surprised how far you can get with just some cheap decoys and a whistle.

whistle if you can flutter your tongue while blowing (I can't really): Don't worry about it being named pintail it will make a pintail sound but you use it for teal and widgeon and mallards too...

Buck Gardner Pintail Whistle Duck Call

Whistle if you can't: Primos High Roller Whistle Duck Call

Don't be afraid to send a PM to anyone to ask questions, you'd be surprised the info you can get back for two reasons:

1) It's private and they'll share info they wouldn't put on the board about locations or tricks.

2) It's one thing to try to answer a question on a forum when you're not sure somebody cares about the answer, it's another to have someone ask you for direct advice. I find that if I ask a specific person a particular question I usually get some pretty interesting answers.
