I just got my permit to hunt in the General Area for Grapevine and Roanoke. Me and one of my friends went to scope it out for some dove hunting in our future. We were having trouble finding a good place to go. Any suggestions?

With the changing water levels and such, you need to scout it. You're probably not gonna get much reliable info regarding spots on the open forum, maybe somebody will help you out with a p.m. but your best bet is to get out and get a feel for the lake. Good luck. up

Honestly, I am not aware of any "good" public Dove places to go right now or I would send you a pm. And with all this rain, water levels don't matter. Dove are not coming to water. They have made it very difficult to hunt that place both access and rules. And with no enforcement it is pretty much trashed by types that could care less about permits and rules. There can be an oasis in any desert so yea there will be times and places where you may have a hot spot for whatever game your hunting, but like said for that area, no one is likely to share much. Even privately.
Good luck this season and welcome to the forum.

BTW. Just curious. What is your permit number?

The area I have been looking at is more around Roanoke. Not by the lake, more near creeks. There is a lot of tree coverage but also some good open spaces. I saw tons of dove, just really not sure where I can go hunting in that area. Looks like I would be good with where the map they gave shows, just not sure.

I hunted grapevine a lot last year. You can PM for info. I wouldn't call it a dove mecca though.

I know I sure had to explain myself to some bowhunters last time I was out there with a shotgun and dog. I would be reminded I needed to wear orange as a small game hunter. Then I would tell them snipe are migratory, so not needed. Then they would think I was pulling their leg and look almost mad. Then I would pull out a bird and really throw them for a loop. Good times, but I can't remember the last time I hunted there. Maybe it will be better with the limit on permits, but I doubt it.

Can you hunt dove with the general permit? I told them I want to hunt dove and duck and they gave me the migratory permit.

even funnier since he waived to say sorry then set up litterally 60 yards down wind of me... It was time for my cig break any way : )

Nice guy actually, I showed him a few better spots since all he had was a pop up.. Guess thats why I get a bent out of shape on the guys that are so up tight about public hunting... We all pay taxes up Community property as long as you follow the rules.. Lot easier to help someone out then loose your temper and go home all heated with a head ache. Karama cheers

Have no idea on that one.. Never hunted doves out there. Water has been pretty high the last two years.

Under the current set up with separate permits; no. But anyone that picked up the migratory permit when available, most likely picked up the general permit too, and vise versa. The general permit is good only for Jan. 16 - Aug.31. So if the gentleman picked up only a general permit, no he is not allowed to hunt Dove on it.
I did find out that they have given out all the migratory permits already. I am still curious what the current permit number is on the general permit. I bet they are getting close to the cutoff. When it was unlimited and all combined, they gave out over 4000 permits. That's crazy! crazy

I'm pretty much in the same boat. Confused about parking. Pretty aggrivating since I got a day off during the week next week and i have no idea where to go.

Why are you threating someone ove rparking problems. Look it is no secret you can hunt this lake if you have a permit. So why get all bent out of shape over it. I used to get mad also but hey to heck with it I don't need the stressnor does anyone else up

No I understand the name game. But with only 500 permits your not going to get to crowed anyway. peep
