I got a call from an old friend that was driving today to pick up his permit.

How is it out there? Can you walk to the blinds, or do you need a boat?

I tried too and was going to hook Dave up as my alternate. Oh Well, can't win them all. I think the problem with that draw is that the local regulars put in every family member and non hunting friend they know and then add themselves as the alternate for any that are drawn.

If you need someone to use that blind with you I'm at A&M, what area of the lake is it on?

I was drawn and Sniper John is correct. That is exactly what happened at the drawing. Every college kid was there with their family and friends and walking into the blind selection room 3 different times with 3 different people to put their name down on the card and pick another spot.

The problem is not the locals... it's the 84,275 Aggie students that put in. The new postcard system is better than the old way. 84,275 Aggies & thier frat/serority sisters showing up to pull a ticket, raffle style. Litterally I believe last year was somewhere near 800 applicants for 30 blinds.

It's a zoo up there, but seems to die down after Thanksgiving...

I didn't get the phone call, nor did any of my cousins, second cousins, and etc.

The old way at the the VFW was good for various reasons that I liked.
1. If you didn't get selected you could grab all the free beer that you could drink in the parking lot.
2. You actually saw them draw tickets.
3. You could buy/trade beer for tickets. (I learned this the second time from two guys who sat across from me at one of the tables awaiting the drawing. One had 14, another had 8. My wife and I felt stupid for only having one each.)
4. See old friends, rangers, etc.
5. Cheesy BBQ dinner to go with the cheap beer.

Yes, the little birds are there but they are always scattered during Teal season. I do my Teal season on the coast and west of Houston.

If you didn't get selected for a blind then give me a pm. during the reg. season. I can take a few out in my boat. Nothing like sharing the experience of running through Pelicans in the dark fog, and watching the morning circus unfold around you at daybreak.

I hated the vfw situation way over crowded and the party atmosphere is y the corp rangers do the mail in draw . They said there were only 550 mailed in and 40ish blinds drawn. Plus after the first couple of wknds of the season the lake will settle down just like hunting any public situation and i got fifth pick and got blind 12
