I am going to be going mountian lion hunting this fall and was hoping to get some advice on a scope...

I might have to take a few longer range shots and I want to make sure I’m hunting with something that will do the job. 99% of the time I hunt with an open site rifle but for a really long shot 300-400 yards I want to make sure I am covered. Currently I have a cheaper tasco scope on an 8mm Mauser that has been sportorized...

The requirements for the scope are:
-simi reasonable price (I know that’s open for debateable)
-distance compensator like I have on my bsa sweet 17
-lots of magnification for long shots to be safe.

Also if there is any reason I should not use an 8mm can you let me know why and sudgestions on what I should use?

I dont want to spend a ton on a new gun setup so if possable I'd like to make something I have work and change out or add a scaope.

Thanks
Shane

If you're on a budget my preference would be one of the low to mid level (Pro Staff or Buckmaster) Nikon scopes with the BDC reticle.

At 400 yards I'd go with at least 14X if not 18X.

most of those were under 500 so thats not as bad as i expected? anyone have any experence with any of the specific scopes? from what i read most are not really ment for an 8mm so maybe i need to change the rifle out too... I would rather spend a bit more and get one good scope that will cover pretty much anything from range to light conditons to whatever...

A mountain lion is usually hunted with dogs and shot at about 50 feet or so depending how high the tree or rock is. Iron sights on a 30-30 work great. You will never see a lion that is 400 yards away.

agreed your mountain lion is going to be fairly close. I would want a lightweight rifle with a normal size scope. You shouldn't be shooting on such a high magnification anyways.
Mountain Rifle, Model 7, Tikka, Sps youth, to name a few.
I don't think cats are that tough so a medium caliber should do fine.243,260,308. Talk with your outfitter

Any of those short action cals would be good. I would think 9x would get you buy.

I checked with my guide before I posed... This is not a dog led hunt, it will be done by baiting, calling and glassing and he said a long shot of 3-400 yards is possible. I don’t mind the weight of the rifle I just want to make sure I get a good scope. Even if it’s over kill id like something that can do pretty much anything I might need in the future.
