Dustin - I own my place but it is not "free due to myself owning it". Boy you got that right. My dad owns 2 places and I hunt both and spend a lot more on those 2 places than I ever did when I paid $800 a year for a deer lease. I guess I should've left the free part out. The government charges you a arm and a leg to own land nah, just have to swing it as ag & timber exempt.

pay $500 a gun on one lease and then $300 a gun on another. One is in Palestine and the other is new and its just E of Naples. Have some good deer on the Palestine lease, been there 11 years, but we are picky on what we shoot and try to manage them the best we can on low fence.

Hey guys, I'm new to the forum I used to pay $2000/gun in callahan county for 4 guns/1000 acres ($8/acre). My dad and I upgraded leases two years ago and now pay $3200 each, 6 hunters total for 20,000 acres = .96 cents/acre to lease. Not too bad for what you get, each hunter has approx 3300 acres to oneself....probably one of the cheapest leases/acre except for those free ones! We substantiate the extra cost cause we have additional game to hunt: whitetail, good number of mule deer, too many hogs, blue and bob-white quail, some audad, turkey, and dove of which we don't hunt. Pretty much hunting on a game preserve cause no one hunts around the property either. We feel fortunate to be on the lease eventhough it is a little pricey. Gauranteed 140+ inch bucks each season. We have some monsters and lots of 110-120 inch bucks we lay off of. Bucks killed last year 146-168 inch. Biggest killed was three years ago at 174. Have some 170-180 inch on camera in late September coming to acron rage in the feeder pens but never see them in season. Bigger the horns, bigger the brain I guess.

I pay $750 a yr/2500 acre lease with 15 hunters and it is a family lease with year round access. Whats even better is one of my stands is about 500 yds from my house. And the actual lease starts 15 ft from my driveway.

New to the Forum. I get to hunt on two different family owned properties. (Owned by my Grandma) It is not free at all. I put tons of work into both of those places to make them work. One of them does share a fence with the King Ranch That place used to be farm land so it is just growing up enough to be huntable land, but it is getting really nice and holding resident deer now. Despite the cost of owning having leased in the past there is no better way than to own.

Please don't take offense, but a lot of guys would just as well share bedroom photos of the wife as to share with any stranger what they pay for their lease.

Hey guys new here as well, got put on here by one of our writers from TX. I feel so very fortunate to hunt in Alberta. We have 80,386,572 acres of public land here, it's free and you don't have to ask anyone to access it.

It is a very beautiful country to visit, hunt, and fish. And the people have always been great to me. But I know about the cost of living, laws, and taxes in Canada ... I would not describe it as "free" ... more like "included in the price".

If he is calling private lands that most of them trespass on and hunt without permission, range roads, or road allowance then I can see where he is coming from. People there are great people and love to hunt just like us. But hunting is not cheap there either...while you can not lease land to hunt nor can the landowner take payment from it is different from Texas in that aspect. He can either allow to hunt or not.
