I got a new 10/22 from my wife this weekend, and shot about 125 or 150 rounds through it. I love this rifle. I looked inside the chamber afterwards and it is completely black and the coating is really thick and gummy. I have heard of something called CLR from walmart that is a cleaner and lubricant. Has anybody else used this? Any other options? Is there an easy way to clean it after use to stop from jamming?

Maybe you got the name wrong. CLR is calcium, lime, rust remover, I wouldn't use it on a rifle.

You may be thinking of Break Free CLP, which cleans and lubricates. I like it and they carry it at Walmart in the gun cleaning section. I use it for lubrication only.

For cleaning, I use Break Free Powder Blast, which is a cleaner. On my 10/22, I put the spray tube on it and hose out the action, then wipe it out, and relube with the CLP.

Be careful, the warning label claims it eats some plastics. Both are reasonably cheap and available at Walamrt.

Shoot straight and always carry a 7mm Remington Magnum.

I just take down the gun, disasembel the bolt and all that junk in there wash it with soapy water, dry it back off, oil the heck out of it wipe of excess, and stick it back together, I also wouldnt clean it after every 150 rounds, mine is lucky if it gets cleaned between every 500.

Hoppe's, gentlemen. Hoppe's. (nitro solvent is OK, hoppe's is best)
Then oil with 3 in 1 oil (sewing machine oil).

I get the same thing in my 10-22 if I put enough rounds through it.

I always thought the BreakFree CLP I use is more of an oil than a cleaning solvent - or at least that's all I've ever used it for, oiling small parts after the cleaning is over. It seems a little thick to use as a solvent, but I admit I've wondered why they call it that. (P stands for protect, you can also get just CL)

If I'm too lazy to break the whole gun down (the usual), I try to get in there with some little picks I have or a knife blade, etc just to pull the big pieces out of the way. Then I use something like B-12 Chemtool to wash all the loose pieces out. Then in with a good powder solvent, No. 9 works good - I use something like Shooters Choice or GM Top Engine Cleaner. It's hard to get a good wipe job in those tiny places without pulling the bolt out, but I admit I don't treat this gun like I would some of my more expensive guns.

Be careful with the B-12....hard on finishes, and residue can burn....but sometimes you got to do what you got to do!

Sorry CLP is it. I was just taking a guess hoping someone would know what I was talking about. Thanks I am gonna try it out this weekend. My bro. in law has the same gun, and he has some jamming issues every time we use it. Probably because he has never cleaned it. He said something about using a different bullet that is cleaner and does not leave such a heavy residue. Has anybody heard of this? Thanks again for the help.

I have only used cci mini mags in mine and i have never had a jam or misfire.
I have heard brake cleaner that comes in spray cans is good, most parts stores carry it,walmart might.

I've used about all the various spray cleaners over the years, incl brake cleaner, just depending on what was cheapest. I just use it to physically flush out the big pieces, not really do any cleaning itself.

The more I think about it, the only two kinds of guns that I hose all the time are auto pistols and O/U shotguns. For me, that means Browning, Sig, Walther, and Kimber - pretty tough guns. With that said, it's never hurt the finish of any gun or wood. [knock on wood]

The one thing that has gone wrong for me is stopping after using the spray - without going ahead with the solvents, etc. Stuff like brake cleaner will strip away any rust preventative whatsoever. I had flash rust within a couple of days in the action of a Browning O/U from doing that. I haven't got over that yet.
