I wanted to see what everyone's opinion was about IR cameras vs. flash.
I have had them both and like the flash because the pictures look better and not so grainy - the draw back is less battery life.
What do you think?
If you are going to do it, give it your best!

IR. This is a no brainer for me. More battery life, and I don't have a big flash going off.

I know you are right - I just hate the pictures from IR - I have use Moultries & Stealth Cam IR's and I just think they are too grainy. What do you use?

I don't think it bothers them either. I think I am going to trade one of mine back in for the flash. I have one of those 12 volt moultrie solar panels any way that recharges.

IR, no brainer.
I don't know if the flash bothers them or not... but I know at night the IR won't.

Ol' pig buck likes to lay down to eat! The flash probably helps him find the corn too.

Curly, I don't know if it bothers them either. But do you have back to back pictures, say 5 minutes apart with the flash? I've got ones like that with my IR. I have a flash and IR that I'm going to check this weekend. I'll see if I notice anything.

I have both...better pics with the flash. The IR had poorer quality night time pics and the IR still glows red and the deer can see it and it does make a slight noise as it powers up. I shoot a 1 minute delay on both. I really think it does not matter to the deer after a few days. It lightenings and does not bother the deer. I really think what does bother them is the when they see the camera hanging there today and it was not there yesterday. I hang a dumbie block of wood the size of my camera on the same place I will put the camera and leave it there year round.

have both on my ranch and prefer the flash 10x over the IR. Deer could care less about the flash

Flash FOR SURE over IR... you can't tell jack about a deer with IR... cant judge score... can't see coloring on the body... can't identify deer from year to year...
I will never buy another IR camera.

Can't judge score? I can judge score exactly the same. Only thing I miss out on is some coloring...not a big deal to me. I'd rather not risk spooking a deer and have a green washed out photo.

I had the Moultrie - I40 & I60 and the pictures are bad at night. I really feel like I missed out on detail. I am switching back to flash.
If you are going to do it, give it your best!

Then you have never sent someone out to kill a deer you have seen on an IR camera and had him come back with something that is 15" bigger... IR makes them look smaller.

No, I haven't ever experienced that. We've never had a problem identifying a deer off of an IR camera. I may get another flash camera to put up, and see the difference for myself...seems like I'm in the minority here.

Justin - I was thinking IR was better for stealth and to extend battery life but I really think the flash is better for detail.
If you are going to do it, give it your best!

Flash, better pic quality for me. Plus the I know the flash doesn't bother the deer, I've asked them, he said no, then I shot him.

Yeah. The battery life is excellent. My last camera lasted 10 months on the same set of batteries, running almost continually.

I have pictures of deer running from both flash and IR cameras... I've watched them react to them from a deer blind...
They get used to them... or they don't... some deer just plain don't like them... some deer will eat protein out of a feeder continuously with 2 different flash cameras taking pictures every 30 seconds and never flinch... maybe they like disco...
Battery life with a flash is the issue... but for the pic quality I deal with it.
Justin... I'm talking about identifying a yearling to 2 year old or 3 year old... not common stuff...
after a while too you just end up with so many similarly shaped "average" mature deer that it is hard to tell those apart too...
Also.. if you can match a antler shape, number of points and a tail/ear/body color up sending someone out to go hunt a deer... that's a lot better...
I've had guides that couldn't count points, tell an antler shape, or see a color... but it is hard to screw all 3 up at once...
