Howdy all,

We lost our lease this month, and it doesn't look good for this year. I have noticed that lots posts mention out of state hunting..
Is this mostly on public lands? NM, CO, AZ?

For example- If I wanted to hunt NW for Mule Deer (not a trophy, just a chance at buck)- how does the process work?
Are there drawings for permits like the TPWD system or is any of the federal land open?

I am just trying to get a feel for how it works for other with some experience.

Thanks!
BC

bass, first off welcome. There are a few guys in here that have and still hunt out of state on public land. They will chime in at some time. If your looking to fill the freezer let me know. I run cheap doe hunts in SW Texas. Best of luck to you and enjoy the Forum

BC, welcome aboard, where do you live? What do you like to hunt?
Get on the TP&W website and look at the info for the Public Lottery Hunts, and the APH hunts. There are some good DIY public land hunts in Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska from what I've seen on the web, and I am going to try and take advantage of somewhere this next season, especially Oklahoma since I now live within sight across the lake from my house.
If you are close - within couple hours driving - just because you don't get drawn for a particular Lottery location it might be worth your time to followup by calling the location to see about hunting on a "standby" basis. Stay tuned and the closer to season it gets you will see all about the Lottery system and how it works.

Welcome to The Forum. There is a lot of good hunting out of Texas, but you have to do a lot of homework on each states system. As an example, the application deadline for permits in Colorado just recently closed. Other states like Oklahoma, Nebraska, and even places like Alabama, and Mississippi have some excellent hunting opportunities for out of staters.

I will second what 7mag said, they do a really great and reasonably priced doe hunt down at LSTO.

I primarily hunt in NM on public land. You have to draw for a tag to hunt deer unless you are going to hunt private property. I hunt the SE part of the state, west of Carlsbad. The draw was over with as of midnight on 04/07/07. If you didn't get a chance to put in, go to the NM fish and game site and if there are any deer tags left over they offer them to the public on a first come first serve basis. It will cost you $6.00 for the tag, regardless of residency status, the HL is is where you pay the non-resident fees. If you have any other questions you can PM if want to.
